Dragon scale binding is one of the forms of ancient Chinese bookbinding, also known as "whirlwind binding". This form already existed in the middle of the Tang Dynasty.

Dragon scale packaging began in the Tang Dynasty and was used in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a form of binding that appeared in the stage of the scroll to the album. It not only saves paper, and facilitates book review, but also has the implicit and restrained beauty of scroll.

At the same time, it also adds the interest of reading, which can be read or viewed, and the interest of page by page is reflected in the chapter. However, due to its complicated and time-consuming production process, the dragon scale has almost lost its existence today.

The dragon scale mounting evolved from the axle mounting. It is like a scroll, made of a long paper base, the first leaf is fully mounted on the bottom, from the right side of the second leaf without words with a strip of paper attached to the bottom, the rest of the book leaf by leaf glued to the left under the previous page. The leaf scales of the book are stacked, leaf by leaf from right to left when reading, and rolled up from the head to the tail when collecting.

When this binding form is rolled up, it looks no different from the scroll, but the inner leaf of the book is like a whirlwind in nature, so the name of the whirlwind; When unfolded, the book leaves are arranged like scales in an orderly manner, so it is also called dragon scale.

Three ways to say dragon scale

First, it is believed that the folding of ancient books is a whirlwind. According to the History of Ancient Chinese Books by emeritus professor Tsien of the University of Chicago, the scroll form of books continued to function until the end of the Tang Dynasty in the 9th century and was replaced by the folded form. Since then, the form of Chinese books has gradually evolved. The original folding style was called the "cyclone pack" or "warp pack." That is to say, the cyclone suit is the folded suit, or the folded suit can also be called the cyclone suit.

Second, it is believed that the cyclone suit evolved based on the folded suit. Liu Guojun and Zheng Rusi's "The Story of the Chinese Book" said: About soon after the appearance of the book folding, someone found that it was easy to spread and break, so they tried to use a large piece of paper to fold it in half, and half was glued to the front leaf of the book, and the other half was wrapped from the right side of the book to the back, and was glued to the end leaf of the book. In this way, there is no danger of unravelling and tearing the leaf when it is taken. If you start from the first leaf and turn straight to the end, you can still turn to the first leaf. Circular reciprocation, without interruption, therefore, is called a "whirlwind". A whirlwind suit is a folded version. The folded and cyclonic dress probably appeared in the middle of the 9th century.

According to the binding form of the Tang Dynasty Manuscript Wang Renshi Published in the Palace Museum in Beijing and the names of various dynasties, another is saying that the cyclonic decoration is a transitional form from the rolling to the leaf-book decoration. It is bound by a long strip of paper slightly wider and thicker than the leaf of the book, and then the first leaf of the single side of the letter is fully glued to the right end of the paper. The remaining leaves are double-sided letters, so a strip of paper is glued to the right side of each leaf without words, and the left scale of each leaf is incorrectly glued to the bottom paper outside each leaf. Since each leaf is stuck to the bottom of the upper leaf, the right side of the adhesion can not see the wrong adhesion seam marks and the left side of the formation of the upper leaf pressure on the lower leaf of the scattered phase of the situation.

When collecting, it is rolled from the head to the tail, contrary to the rolling of the reel. From the outside, it is still a reel, but the internal leaf is rolled and rotated in one direction, like a whirlwind in nature, so the ancients called it a whirlwind leaf, a whirlwind leaf roll, that is a whirlwind pack. Because its book leaves row upon row, like dragon scale, it is also called dragon scale. When opened to read, the first leaf can not be turned because the whole width is glued on the backing paper, the rest of the book leaves can be turned at will, leaf by leaf, like reading modern books. This form of binding not only retains the shell of the reel but also solves the contradiction of inconvenient checking, which is an improvement of the reel. When the leaf gets rid of its backing paper, the leaf pack is truly created.

Its form is: long paper as the base, the first page is mounted on the first page, and from the second page, the scale is mounted to the left on the bottom volume. It is characterized by easy leafing and helps to protect the pages.
