Dai paper is an ancient papermaking technique inherited by the Dai people in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan Province, China. It is known as "rainforest watchpaper" and has profound historical and cultural value.
Historical background
历史背景
傣纸，源自云南傣族地区，是一种历史悠久的传统手工造纸技艺。它的历史悠久，可以追溯到唐代，是傣族人民智慧的结晶。是中国目前所能见到的最原始的造纸术之一。
Dai paper, originating from the Dai region of Yunnan Province, is a traditional handmade papermaking technique with a long history. It dates back to the Tang Dynasty and crystallises the wisdom of the Dai people. It is one of the most primitive papermaking techniques in China.
傣族最早用于书写的纸是“贝叶”，后来发展为使用构树皮作为原料的傣纸，这一技艺与北魏贾思勰在《齐民要术》中记载的构树皮造纸方法一致，被视为中国古代造纸术的“活化石”。
傣纸的历史可追溯至南传上座部佛教传入中国傣族地区时，其佛事活动就出现了傣族手工造纸。
The history of Dai paper can be traced back to the introduction of southern Theravada Buddhism into the Dai area of China, and Dai handmade papermaking became part of its Buddhist activities.
Production technology
制作工艺
傣纸的制作原料为桑科植物构树的树皮，整个过程不添加任何化学药剂，保留了造纸术发明初期的“浸泡、蒸发、捣浆、浇纸、晒纸”五步流程和11道工序。
The raw material of Dai paper is the bark of the mulberry tree. The whole process does not add any chemical agents and retains the five-step process and 11 processes of "soaking, evaporation, ramming, pouring paper and drying paper" in the early days of the paper invention.
制作工序包括采料、晒料、浸泡、拌灰、蒸煮、洗涤、捣浆、浇纸、晒纸、砑光、揭纸等。
The production process includes collecting material, drying material, soaking, mixing ash, cooking, washing, ramming, pouring paper, drying paper, calendering, stripping paper, etc.
傣纸的制作十分环保，通过反复制取纯天然构树树皮，敲打成纤维后全手工制成。
Dai paper is very environmentally friendly. It is made by hand after repeatedly taking the bark of a natural conformation tree and beating it into fibres.
每一步都需要匠人的精心操作，体现了对自然材料的深刻理解和尊重。
