Dragon and Tiger Lantern Dance, also known as Dragon Lantern Dance, is a traditional folk dance that combines elements of dragon and tiger, widely spread throughout China.
Legend has it that it originated in the Han Dynasty and is related to worship and prayer, reflecting the ancient people's reverence and prayers for the two animals, dragons and tigers.

龙虎灯起源于汉代,当时主要用于祭祀和祈福,祈求风调雨顺、国泰民安。到了唐宋时期,龙虎灯表演技巧逐渐丰富,成为一种具有繁多表演技巧的传统舞蹈艺术。如今,龙虎灯已成为中国民间文化的重要组成部分,各地都有传承和发展。
Dragon and tiger lanterns originated in the Han Dynasty and were mainly used for worship and prayer, praying for good weather and peace for the country and the people. In the Tang and Song dynasties, the performance techniques of dragon and tiger lanterns gradually became rich, becoming a traditional dance art with a variety of performance techniques. 制作工艺
龙虎灯的制作材料主要包括竹蔑、彩纸、颜料等。竹蔑用于制作灯架,彩纸用于糊面,颜料则用于绘制图案。这些材料的选择和使用都体现了传统手工艺的精湛技艺。
龙虎灯的制作流程繁琐而精细,包括制作灯脚、糊棉纸、用颜料打花写字、风干、涂清油防水增亮等多个步骤。
The main materials for making dragon and tiger lanterns include bamboo paste, coloured paper, pigments, etc. The bamboo paste is used to make lamp stands, coloured paper is used for pasting, and pigments are used for drawing patterns. The selection and use of these materials reflect the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional handicrafts.
The production process of dragon and tiger lamps is tedious and delicate, including multiple steps such as making lamp legs, pasting the cotton paper, colouring and writing, air drying, and applying clear oil for waterproofing and brightening.

一、骨架材料:通常使用竹篾或细铁丝作为龙虎灯的骨架材料。
二、灯面材料:纱布、棉纸或特制的纸张,用于覆盖在骨架上,形成灯的主体部分。
三、装饰材料:颜料、胶水、清油、细棉线等,用于装饰和固定灯面,以及增强灯的防水性和亮度。
四、编织骨架:根据龙虎灯的形态,使用竹篾或细铁丝编织出基本的骨架结构。
五、固定骨架:在编织过程中,使用细棉线或其他固定材料将骨架的各个部分牢固地连接在一起,防止变形。
六、黏附纱布:在骨架的中间部位黏附上纱布,作为灯面的基础层。
七、贴纸:使用粉浆将裁剪好的纸张贴满灯笼外表,并在纸上刷一层胶水,然后放置晾干。
八、画灯:在灯面上作画是龙虎灯的点睛之笔。
九、刷漆:在绘画完成后,需要刷上一层清油或其他防水涂料,以增强灯的防水性和亮度。
十、组装:将制作好的骨架、灯面和装饰材料组装在一起,形成完整的龙虎灯。

3、 Decorative materials: pigments, adhesives, cleaning oil, fine cotton thread, etc., used for decorating and fixing the lamp surface, as well as enhancing the waterproofing and brightness of the lamp.
Four 、 Weaving skeleton: Based on the shape of the dragon and tiger lantern, bamboo strips or fine wire are used to weave the basic skeleton structure.
Five 、 Fixed skeleton: During the weaving process, use fine cotton thread or other fixing materials to firmly connect the various parts of the skeleton to prevent deformation.
Six 、 Adhesive gauze: Attach gauze to the middle part of the skeleton as the base layer of the lamp surface.
7、 Stickers: Use paste to cover the surface of the lantern with cut paper, brush a layer of glue on the paper, and then let it dry.
8、 Drawing lights: Drawing on the surface of the light is the finishing touch of the dragon and tiger lights.
Nine 、 Painting: After painting, it is necessary to apply a layer of clear oil or other waterproof coating to enhance the waterproofing and brightness of the lamp.
Ten 、 Assembly: Assemble the pre-made skeleton, lamp surface, and decorative materials to form a complete dragon and tiger lamp.

Dragon and tiger lanterns have the meaning of exorcising evil spirits and praying for blessings in traditional culture. As divine beasts of the Chinese nation, dragons and tigers symbolise strength and majesty and can bless people with peace, auspiciousness, and good weather. Therefore, dragon and tiger lanterns are often used in temples for prayer or hung at home for peace.
Dragon and tiger lanterns are also often combined with various folk activities, such as Yuanxiao (Filled round balls made of glutinous rice flour for Lantern Festival), Spring Festival and other traditional festivals. During these festivals, people light up dragon and tiger lanterns and hold various celebration activities to pray for good luck and a bountiful harvest in the coming year.
With the development of the times, traditional handicrafts such as dragon and tiger lanterns are facing challenges in inheritance and development. However, many craftsmen and artists are still striving to protect and inherit this cultural heritage, revitalising traditional crafts such as dragon and tiger lanterns through innovative design and modern craftsmanship.
