That Was Not Water
The day before yesterday
She said to me
Her man beat her
She showed me the bruises on her legs and neck
She said, The bastard, son of a bitch
I will never forgive him as long as I breathe
Yesterday
She said to me
That bastard screwed her
She said
He didn’t even apologize
Before he stabbed in
I asked
How was that
"Strange,” she said
“It flooded down there
And I believed
That was not water
But my tears”

Self-Confidence
At three, she
Wiped her own ass
At twenty, she
Wiped her son’s
At forty, she
Wiped her mother-in-law’s
And now
She waits, patiently
For the day to turn to her husband’s
That day will
Surely come
Like a breeze

wipe one's ass" in Chinese also means "clean up the mess."
The Son of a Woman Cannot Understand
The son of a woman cannot understand
Her ankle, bruised by new slippers
He points his plump hands and cry: Blood, blood
The ankle bruised when God tries on the new world
God wishes His own son to understand
But gives no permission to point at it
Much less to cry
Eyes Closed in Love Pleasure
Eyes closed in love pleasure
Will open in hatred
And never close again
Staring at what love doesn't see
The loud curses in love pleasure
Turn into real curses—
Go to hell, go to hell
Till death responds like a parrot
Echoing the name that love never forgives

Soul Evocative
Death has fallen on their heads
And the camera is a gunpoint at them
The court hearing drawing to its climax
Two bailiffs, one at each side
Seize him like pulling the strings
Of a puppet. His lips curling slightly
I see a face so clean, so beautiful
A close-up
I stare at it greedily
Only to be taken by an unexpected
That face—
It smiles, for no reason
Yet as if after careful premeditation
The camera seems to be shot
Its head hastily turned away
Focus pushed to search
For a more appropriate expression
But it is too late—helpless
I am already entrapped by it
Excited, like a victim

The greatest miracle of love is that it clears away flirtation; the greatest miracle of poetry is that it clears away cliché. --Lü Yue
Lü Yue (pronounced as lju: jue), born in 1972, is a Chinese major from East China Normal University (Shanghai). She employs a very laconic, colloquial language in her poetry, yet the critique and grotesqueness—often bordering on absurdism—set her apart from the so-called spoken-word poets who wish to lasso her into their circus. She is undoubtedly beyond most of them, though she does seem close enough to absorb some influence, which, in my understanding, does more harm than good to her work. Unlike those spoken-word poets who often write to be “seen” as poets and treat writing as a performance, Lü Yue does not write much. These two early poems showcase a distinctive voice that is entirely her own.
