CAS介绍
CAS Introduction
CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is a key component of the International Baccalaureate (IB), which aims to foster the holistic development of students in the areas of creativity, activity, and service to the community. Creativity encourages students to use their imagination and innovation to express themselves through art, design, science, and other forms; Activity emphasizes the importance of students' participation in sports, and at the same time develops their teamwork and leadership skills; and Service is the most educationally significant part of
CAS, which encourages students to pay attention to social issues, actively participate in community services, and provide help and support to others, thus cultivating their empathy, sense of responsibility and civic awareness.

CAS is not only a useful supplement to academic programs, but also an important way to prepare students to become lifelong learners, active participants and responsible citizens. This hands-on education helps students to
better understand themselves, community and the world, and to be prepared for the challenges of the future.

Fudan International School has always emphasized the implementation of CAS activities, as it is in line with the school's philosophy of holistic education. Almost every year, a group of G11 students spend a week out of Shanghai participating in CAS community service activities. This year, students were divided into two groups and went to Qianyang Village, Fujian and Qingdao, Shandong respectively. And
this is the 9th year that the FDIS students have visited the Home of Tongxing in Qingdao. In today’s post, we will first share with you the Qingdao team’s experiences and reflections.

Preparations
In the months leading up to the trip, the 11th graders had already begun their intense and orderly preparations: they went to a special education center in Shanghai to learn about the similar situations; they sold silk scarves, coffee, postcards and other items in order to raise money to replace tiles for Tongxing; they carefully designed intellectual lessons and educational activities to help the children of Tongxing make progress;
they opened a cloud classroom from time to time to discuss how to work togehter; they thought about what they could do to improve the children's living environment. With the donation and teaching aids, full of excitement and expectation, the students boarded the plane to Qingdao on May 19th.

CAS Experiences
As soon as we entered Tongxing, we met the busy principal, Mr. Xu, who briefly introduced to us the living environment of Tongxing and the situation of the special students. The teaching facilities here are relatively complete, and the living environment is simple and clean. There are more than 20 special students, aged between 8 and 26. After learning about the details, Candy and Donna, the team leaders, also explained the teaching and
activity arrangements they had planned confidently. They have already divided into groups and are ready to bring Chinese, English, math, drawing and physical education classes to the children, as well as changing floor tiles, painting walls, and cleaning chairs and stools.

Soon after, the local students entered the classroom one after another. At first, our "little teachers" were still a little uneasy because they did not know how to communicate with them, but after a brief trial, they found that these children are full of goodwill, although they may
encounter poor verbal expression, but with the addition of body language and eye contact, they can let each other understand feelings, and they gradually found a way to communicate with them in a way that is suitable for them.

Activity One: Delivering Classes
G11 Candy)
The First Chinese lesson - G11 Candy
Donna wrote down the pinyin consonants and rhymes on the whiteboard and led the class in reading the consonants. To make it more interactive, Joseph invited the students to come up to the stage to write their names in Pinyin and note the consonants. Levi then led the class in reading the rhyming letters and completing the syllable combinations and spellings. We started with the most basic Chinese characters, writing our
names and inviting students to label the pinyin. This session was designed with the hope that they would get to know each other better on top of learning pinyin. It turned out to be very useful, and we were all thrilled to have students who could write our names in full on the third day.

The next session was to learn the rules of pinyin by playing a game, which was fun and educational. However, after trying it out, we realized that the game was a bit too difficult, so the lead teacher, Ms. Jing, had the bright idea of asking the students to add radicals to the characters "青" , "包" , and "少" , so that they could form a new character. We instantly understood and adjusted our strategies, and in a short while, the "teachers and students" on and off the stage together contributed a lot of
new words. After the class ended, the students were still eager to learn more and expanded on the words "分" and "且" etc. Ronnie, Nagomi, and other students showed great patience and interacted with the students. Kudos to them for their wonderful performance. I didn't expect the "temporary rescue" activity to have a good ice-breaking effect, and it paved the way for the future teaching of poems such as "The Winging Goose" and " Song of Water Tune".

The English Class on Day 3 - G11 Anna
At the beginning of the class, Jessica, Viktor and I reviewed the English vocabulary of the previous lesson on emotional expression, and utilized carefully designed games, such as "Emotion Guessing", to deepen the students' memory and understanding of various emotional vocabulary in an interactive way.
The initial idea of designing these activities was to encourage them to better recognize and express their emotions in daily life, thus promoting the development of emotional intelligence.

紧接着,我们引入了一首全新的儿歌—“London Bridge is Falling Down”。
Afterwards, we reviewed two English children's songs: "BINGO" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider". Along with the rhythm of the songs, the children clapped and sang along with the lyrics and even made gestures accordingly, which made learning lively and interesting with the participation of the whole body, and the classroom was filled with laughter. Next, we introduced a brand new children's song - "London Bridge is Falling Down". Led
by the students, we stood up and simulated the swaying of the bridge, deepening our understanding of the lyrics through physical movements.

Looking back, we still feel a sense of accomplishment. On our first day here, our English class was almost cut because it was considered “not matching the students’
level of comprehension,” so we immediately made adjustments according to the students' situation, and they were really great.

In addition to Chinese and English classes, the "Little Teachers" also carefully arranged math classes, physical education classes, drawing classes, movie appreciation, etc. They accompany and teach them the appropriate knowledge based on their levels. Ms. Ellie also took the children and adults to dance with the
"Bunny Dance" and "Lemon Tree" – the scene was really cute. Whether it was running on the playground, drawing, or doing math, it was easy to see how much they love it!

Of course, there were also a lot of educational activities after school. We sang the song "A Night Outside Moscow" together, and Ms. Caroline Quan, the Deputy Director of FDIS, accompanied us on the piano when she came to Qingdao to visit us from her busy
schedule. We also folded paper, assembled models, played Rubik's Cube, kneaded ultralight clay, played the game of “finding friends”, and so on and so forth. This warm companionship is really touching.

Activity Two: Working Hard
If you want to do a service activity, do it well. The "Little Teachers" took the lunch break to do the labor, they were not afraid of hard work, showing the spirit of Fudan International School students. They changed tiles, washed chairs and stools, painted walls, and drew and wrote on the walls for three days in a row, leaving their own "masterpieces" while beautifying the environment proudly. Some groups also tried to help with cooking activities, such as peeling green onions and garlic, cutting gingers, cutting watermelons, etc., and all of them realized how difficult it is to cook. During the working time, the two enthusiastic lead teachers and all the students sweated together with great energy, as if they were in a hot race.
Principal Xu not only generously provided painting materials, but also thoughtfully prepared delicious afternoon refreshments to replenish everyone's energy. What was even more touching was that some local students gave up their lunch breaks and joined this big family of laborers without hesitation. Teachers and students worked together to build the future of Tongxing in the hope that it would become even more beautiful.

Activity Three: Final Performance
随后,英语组的同学们一起热情洋溢地唱了三首英文儿歌:《BINGO》、《Itsy Bitsy Spider》、《London Bridge is Falling Down》。
To commemorate the time spent together, the students from Shanghai and Qingdao gave a special performance of songs. The local students first sang "The Winging Goose" and "Song of Water Tune", which they had learned in their Chinese lessons. Afterwards, the English group sang three English children's songs: "BINGO", "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "London Bridge is Falling Down" with great enthusiasm. Finally, all the teachers and students sang "Finding Friends", "Farewell", "Anthem of Fudan University", "If You’re Happy and You Know It Clap Your Hands", etc. The crowds gathered together, and the songs and
dances intertwined into a vivid picture. In the midst of laughter and applause, everyone's face was filled with warm smiles. At this moment, time seemed to have slowed down and stayed quietly in this space full of friendship and happiness, intoxicating people with this rare joy and warmth.

As the CAS trip in Qingdao drew to a close, the students felt nostalgic, bidding farewell to those innocent, kind, and warm children. Although we know that their life path will not be smooth all the time, we firmly believe that the sense of security and warmth given to them by Tongxing will be their strength to move forward, and will always be hem from the wind and rain and accompanying them to grow strongly.
with them. We will continue to be with these children who shine like stars, and do our best to provide them with help and support. We hope that Tongxing continues to prosper and becomes a sheltered harbor in the hearts of the children, shielding them from the wind and rain and accompanying them to grow strongly.
