A Review of PD programs at Fudan International School in Fall Semester in 2023-24




为更好地提高复旦附中国际部教师的教育教学水平,学校定期举办围绕本学年课程建设主题展开的教师专业发展培训工作坊,并加以充满多样性的各类特色培训。2023-24学年第一学期中,小学部积极推动课程融合的建设与发展,中学部重点开展概念性理解教学、社会情感学习等主题。通过这些专业而富有启发的培训活动,中小学部教师们参与了深度学习之旅,构建起了更全面、先进的知识体系,以应对当前瞬息万变的教育环境,为每位学生的成长提供有力支持。

In order to better improve teaching and learning of the teachers, Fudan International School regularly organizes professional development workshops around the theme of curriculum development for the current school year, as well as various kinds of special trainings full of diversity. In the first semester of the school year 2023-24, the Elementary School actively promotes the development of the integration of the curriculum, and the Middle and High School focuses on the topics of conceptual-based teaching, 

social-emotional well-being and learning, etc. Through these professional and inspiring training activities, the teachers have engaged in a deep learning journey to build a more comprehensive and advanced system of knowledge to cope with the rapidly changing educational environment and to support the growth of each student.

国际性探索:芬兰跨学科教学的创新之路

Exploring Internationally: 

Finnish Innovations in Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning

本学期开学伊始,复旦附中邀请到了来自芬兰的国家级首席教育专家丽塔博士。丽塔博士重点阐述了芬兰教育的特色理念以及跨学科教育实践两大方面的内容,为老师们分享了在芬兰教育语境下对跨学科的理解。在丽塔博士的指导下,中小学教师志愿者现场实操,展示了跨学科教学的魅力,也得到了丽塔博士的积极反馈。此次讲座激发了教师们对跨学科协作的持续关注,并在今后的教学活动中积极推动以激励为主的终身学习机制。

At the beginning of this semester, the High School Affiliated to Fudan University invited Dr. Riita, the national chief education expert from Finland, to share her understanding of interdisciplinary education in the context of Finnish education. Dr. Riita focused on two aspects of Finnish education: the characteristic concepts of Finnish education and the practice of interdisciplinary education, and shared her understanding of interdisciplinary education in the context of Finnish education with the teachers. Under the guidance of Dr. Riita, 

the ES and MS&HS teacher volunteers demonstrated the charm of interdisciplinary teaching and received positive feedback from Dr. Riita. The seminar inspired the teachers to pay attention to interdisciplinary collaboration continuously and to actively promote incentive-based lifelong learning mechanisms in their future teaching activities.

Q1 Workshop

2023年10月13日,小学部迎来了本学期第一次全体教师专业发展培训日,本次培训由MAP考试大中华区负责人陈曦博士主讲。陈曦博士以班级MAP成绩报告、学习目标分析、学生具体案例等,深入解读了如何利用MAP数据规划教学安排,指引老师开展有针对性的备课、实施差异化教学。

On October 13, 2023, the Elementary School welcomed the first professional development training day for all teachers this semester, which was presented by Dr. Xi Chen, Head of MAP Exam Greater China. Dr. Chen explained in depth how to use MAP data to plan teaching arrangements, guide teachers to carry out targeted lesson planning and implement differentiated instruction with class MAP score reports, learning goal analysis, and student-specific cases.

第二学季培训工作坊

Q2 Workshop

2023年12月8日,小学部迎来了本学期第二次全体教师专业发展培训日。本次培训旨在提升教师在正面管教和差异化教学方面的专业能力,深化课程融合建设。教师培训整体分为两个部分,在第一部分的培训中,ELG学建的心理咨询师就正面管教和建立师生关系为主题,为第一组教师分析了学生行为的动因,以及正面管教的措施和效果。第二组教师就英语的差异化教学进行了深刻的研讨,并按学科和年级分组积极分享了差异化教学的经验,共同探讨了针对不同学生情况的实操性策略,致力于更有效地满足学生的个性化学习需求。第二部分的培训以跨学科教研为主题,小学全体中外教师进行第二学季课程大纲的修订。各学科老师互相交流了第二学季所学主题、内容和重要概念,思考并尝试将教学网站资源有机融入到主题探究学习中去。

On December 8, 2023, the Elementary School had its second professional development training day for all teachers this semester. The training aimed to enhance teachers' professional competence in positive discipline and differentiated instruction, and to deepen the building of curriculum integration. The overall teacher training was divided into two parts. In the first part of the training, ELG Learning and Building's counselor analyzed the motivation of students' behaviors, as well as the measures and effects of positive discipline for the first group of teachers on the topic of positive discipline and building teacher-student relationships. Teachers in the 

second group had a profound discussion on differentiated instruction in English and actively shared their experiences in differentiated instruction by subject and grade level, discussing practical strategies for different student situations and working to more effectively meet students' individual learning needs. The second part of the training was themed on interdisciplinary teaching and research, and all Chinese and foreign teachers in elementary school revised their syllabus for the second school quarter. Teachers from all disciplines shared with each other the themes, contents and important concepts learned in the second quarter, and thought about and tried to organically integrate the resources of the online resources into the thematic inquiry learning.

Other Workshops

每周二、周四下午,小学部中外教齐聚,分别进行学科教研和集体备课。这是一个充满活力和创新的时刻,教师们通过深入分析和反思上周的教学情况,共同探讨提高教学质量的方法和策略,策划本周以及下周的教学工作。这些教研活动为教师们提供了更富有深度和广度的学习体验,为共铸卓越教育奠定了坚实的基础。

Every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, Chinese and foreign teachers in the Elementary School gather together for subject teaching and research and collective lesson planning respectively. This is a vibrant and innovative time for teachers to analyze and reflect on last week's teaching in depth, discuss methods and strategies to improve teaching quality, and plan together for this week and the next. These teaching and research activities provided teachers with learning experiences of greater depth and breadth, laying a solid foundation for forging excellence in education together.

培训主题一:聚焦概念性理解教学

Theme 1: Focus on Conceptual Understanding

复旦附中国际部中学部一向注重以“聚焦概念性理解的教学”为主题的教研活动,自本学期开始,教师团队已参加过两次集体校内培训,内容涵盖了从宏观与微观概念的辨识,到构建高质量的概念性理解,再到概念驱动性课堂的设计等方面。通过这两次校内培训,教师们深入了解概念教学的理论基础,学习如何设计基于概念的课程,在今后的教学中更好地应用概念教学方法,为学生提供优质且丰富的学习体验。


The Middle and High School of FDIS has always emphasized on the theme of "Focusing on Teaching Conceptual Understanding". Since the beginning of this semester, the team has participated in two in-school trainings, which covered from identifying macro and micro concepts, to constructing high-quality conceptual understandings and designing concept-driven classrooms. Through these two in-school trainings, teachers gained an in-depth understanding of the theoretical foundations of conceptual teaching and learning how to design concept-based lessons, and better apply conceptual teaching methods in their future teaching to provide students with quality and rich learning experiences.

2023年10月13日下午,中学部教师专业发展的培训主题是“深入研究概念理解”。IBDP协调员孙霞老师带领教师们聚焦于概念教学的核心问题,探讨了“什么是概念?”以及“单元的概念理解是如何建构的?”之后,在专题论文协调员许彬老师的主持下,IB教师们还分享了关于指导学生如何高效完成拓展性论文写作过程中的有效经验,为其他教师提供了宝贵的参考和借鉴。

On the afternoon of October 13, 2023, the theme of the Middle and High School Teacher Professional Development was "Delving into Conceptual Understanding," and IBDP Coordinator, Ms. Sun Xia, led the teachers to focus on the core issues of conceptual teaching and learning, exploring the questions "What is a concept?" , "How is a unit of conceptual understanding constructed?" and "How is conceptual understanding constructed in a unit?" Afterwards, Extended Essay Coordinator Ms. Xu Bin invited experienced IB teachers to share their experiences on how to guide students to complete the extended essay writing process efficiently, which provided valuable references and lessons for other teachers.

2023年12月8日下午的培训主题是“解锁概念为基础的教学”的教师培训,国际部特邀“问西东学术共创”联合创始人、IB资深培训师吉华博士进行讲授。在培训的第一部分,吉华博士深入探讨了概念的理论基础。她重点关注人类语言与教育之间的联系,揭示语言如何承载概念,并深入了解抽象概念在使用人类语言进行交流中的基本作用。第二部分中,吉华博士带着教师们学习如何设计基于概念的课堂。这包括识别学科中的关键概念,开发促进深层概念理解的课堂活动,创建能够评估学生是否掌握概念的评估工具,以及如何调整课堂进度以满足不同学习风格的学生。第三部分则是基于概念的课堂协作设计,教师们合作设计强调概念理解的课程计划,并分享有效的教学策略,并接受有益的反馈。

On the afternoon of December 8, 2023, the theme of the training was "Unlocking Concept-Based Teaching and Learning". FDIS invited Dr. Ji Hua, co-founder of WenXiDong Academia and expert IB workshop leader, to deliver the training. In the first part of the training, Dr. Ji explored the theoretical foundations of concepts. She focused on the connection between human language and education, revealing how language carries concepts and gaining insight into the fundamental role of abstract concepts in the use of human language for communication. In the second part of the program, Dr. Ji took teachers through how to design a concept-based classroom. This included identifying key concepts in the subject matter, developing classroom activities that promote deep conceptual understanding, creating assessment tools that can 

evaluate whether students are mastering concepts, and how to adapt classroom pacing to meet the needs of students with different learning styles. The third part looked at collaborative design for concept-based classrooms, where teachers work together to design lesson plans that emphasize conceptual understanding and share effective instructional strategies and receive helpful feedback.

通过这些教师培训活动,复旦附中国际部中学部的教师们加深了对“聚焦概念性理解的教学”的理解与应用,为培养具有国际视野和创新精神的优秀学生而不懈努力。

Through these teacher trainings, the Middle and High School teachers of FDIS have deepened their understanding and application of "Teaching with a Focus on Conceptual Understanding" in order to cultivate outstanding students with an international outlook and an innovative spirit.

培训主题二:社会情感学习

Theme II: Social Emotional Well-being and Learning

2023年10月27日,中学部学生事务办公室组织了一场关于“社会情感学习”的培训,旨在全面提高教师的社会情感技能。此次培训邀请了冯琳老师(前国际儿童救助会成员)主讲。冯老师深入浅出地从中国青少年的心理健康和社会福利状况、影响心理健康的问题或因素、经历逆境的学生和教师的压力、课堂上的心理支持以及个案研究等五个方面,通过理论与实际相结合,与老师们共同讨论如何发现学生的心理异常、如何走近学生,帮助学生。老师们结合理论知识,通过小组讨论、分享展示和案例分析,探索出了许多行之有效的方案,对自身的社会情感技能有了进一步的了解和认识。

On October 27, 2023, the Student Affairs Office of Middle and High School organized a training on "Psychosocial Health and Social-Emotional Learning" with the aim of improving teachers' social-emotional skills. Ms. Feng Lin (former member of Children's Aid International) was invited to give the training. Ms. Feng discussed how to detect psychological abnormalities in students and how to approach students to help them through a combination of theory and practice from five aspects: mental health and social welfare of Chinese youth, problems or factors affecting mental health, stress of students and teachers experiencing adversity, psychological support in the classroom, and case studies. Combining theoretical knowledge with group discussions, sharing presentations and case studies, the teachers explored many proven solutions and gained a better understanding and awareness of their own social-emotional skills.

中学部除了定期举办教师专业发展培训活动以外,学科组内教研活动与学科组之间的交流活动也在不定期地进行中,相信教师们在提升自身的专业教学水平与社会情感技能的同时,一定会为培养学生的学术能力与自我管理能力提供指导与帮助。

In addition to the regular professional development training activities organized by Middle and High School, teaching and research activities within and between subject groups are also conducted from time to time. It is believed that teachers will provide guidance and assistance in developing students' academic and self-management skills while improving their own professional teaching and social-emotional skills.

跨学科项目化学习的进一步实践与探索

Further Practice and Exploration of Interdisciplinary Project-based Learning

2023年末,全体中方教师开展了“跨学科项目化学习的实践与探索”的主题培训。薛骁南老师分享了TSCA跨学科项目化学习课程的框架,包括课程目标、项目设计与实施、学生评估等内容。TSCA以学生为中心,通过跨学科项目化学习实现对学生知识、技能、概念和素养的多维度培养。薛老师以项目“石器的进化”为例,分享了如何在项目中落实概念性教学的经验。此外,鲍凯莉老师也分享了正在进行的项目“上海传统品牌创新设计”,展示了项目中丰富的学生实践活动,并介绍了为学生提供的工作坊,使学生可以身临其境地体验创业的过程。

In the workshop of "Practice and Exploration of Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning" for all Chinese teachers at the end of 2023, Mr. Thomas Xue shared the framework of TSCA's Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning (IPL) curriculum, including curriculum objectives, project design and implementation, and student assessment, etc. TSCA is a student-centered program that develops knowledge, skills, concepts, and literacy in a multidimensional way through interdisciplinary project-based learning. Mr. Xue shared his 

experience on how to implement conceptual teaching in the project "Evolution of Stone Tools". In addition, Ms. Kylie Bao shared her ongoing project "Innovative Design of Shanghai Traditional Brands", demonstrated the rich practical activities of the project, and introduced the workshops provided for students to experience the process of entrepreneurship in an immersive environment.

本场培训特别邀请了上海市教育科学研究院普通教育研究所副所长夏雪梅博士对我们的跨学科项目化学习课程TSCA进行点评。夏博士对TSCA课程的设计理念表示认可,并对TSCA的实践与探索给予了肯定。同时,夏博士也指出了项目设计中可提升的细节,如驱动型问题的设计及学科深度学习的关注。

This training session specially invited Dr. Xuemei Xia, Deputy Director of the Institute of General Education of the Shanghai Academy of Educational Sciences, to comment on our interdisciplinary project-based learning course, TSCA. Dr. Xia acknowledged the design concepts of the TSCA course and the practice and exploration of TSCA. At the same time, Dr. Xia also pointed out the details that could be improved in the project design, such as the design of driving questions and the focus on deep learning in disciplines.

Although this semester's teaching work is coming to an end, the teachers in the field of international education have never stopped improving their professional development and comprehensive quality.
