The Illuminating Power of Reading
今年9月,第四届南方周末“阅读新火种”中学生读后感征文活动启动,并面向全国中学生征集作品。这一征文活动旨在鼓励更多学子通过阅读优秀著作,拓展知识视野,丰富内心世界,进而提升个人素养与文化品味。嘉宾评委包括著名作家路内、北京师范大学文学院副院长张莉、语文教育研究所所长荣维东、中学与原文正高级教师黄德初等。两个月来,活动吸引了来自全国各地中学生的积极参与。
In September this year, the 4th Southern Weekly "New Spark of Reading" essay contest for middle and high school students was launched, inviting student submissions nationwide. This essay competition aims to encourage more students to broaden their knowledge and enrich their inner world by reading excellent works and enhancing personal qualities and cultural taste. The guest judges included renowned writer Lu Nei, Deputy Dean of the School of Chinese Language and Literature at Beijing Normal University Zhang Li, Director of the Institute of Chinese Language Education Rong Weidong, and Senior Teacher Huang Dechu. Over the past two months, the event has attracted active participation nationwide.
11月,征文活动的结果公布。我校九年级的Jasmine Li同学以《一场对“思”杀的反抗——<使女的故事>读后感》一文,荣获全国高中组优秀奖。在全国范围内,共80多名高中生获奖,其中上海地区仅一人获二等奖,三人获优秀奖。在这篇文章中,Jasmine展现了广泛的阅读面,以及对社会的深入思考。
In November, the results of the essay contest were announced. Jasmine Li, a ninth-grade student from FDIS, won an Excellence Award in the national high school category with her essay titled "A Rebellion Against the Suppression of Thought—Reflections on The Handmaid's Tale." Nationwide, over 80 high school students received awards, among whom only one student from Shanghai was awarded the Second Prize, and three, including Jasmine, received Excellence Awards. In her essay, Jasmine demonstrated a broad range of reading as well as deep reflection on societal issues.

Excerpt from the Winning Entry
Offred, whose name suggests she belongs to Fred, has had her original name discarded. Yet, she is not merely an appendage; she is an independent personality, depicted through her memoir, which is but a part of Offred. Similar to Anne Frank's Diary, it showcases the thoughts of a clear-minded, independent individual amidst chaos. Any thought may not immediately spark a revolution or eradicate governmental malpractice. However, much like the separation of powers proposed by French philosopher Montesquieu in the 18th century, which was not adopted by France at the time but later became a core principle in the U.S. Constitution, the pace of implementation lags behind that of ideas. Nonetheless, ultimately, all seeds of "thought" will inevitably blossom and bear fruit.
The Student Says
I chose to write about The Handmaid's Tale because I love dystopian novels. The worlds they create seem far removed from reality yet always reflect real-world issues. The society in the book has become so extreme that most people have lost a part of their humanity. As an outside reader, this serves as a reminder to always think critically and not be swayed by the masses. Just like Offred, who, despite being constrained by societal rules, still chooses to follow her heart and view everything around her rationally. Therefore, I decided to start from the stories recorded in her memoir, showcasing Offred's great will and belief.
Ms. Fiona Xu, the Supervisor, Says
Through daily interactions and guidance in writing, I've come to deeply understand the importance of guiding students to delve into the text's deeper meanings and connect them with personal experiences. Encouraging students to not only summarize the story but also analyze the characters' inner thoughts and themes, and cultivate critical and multi-perspective thinking skills. At the same time, guide them to use specific examples to support their viewpoints, making the articles more substantial and powerful. Through group discussions, promote the collision of ideas among students and broaden the perspective of writing. Most importantly, we emphasize sincere expression of one's feelings, making writing a bridge connecting readers, authors, and the times. Starting from the students' interests not only stimulates their enthusiasm for reading and writing, allowing students to feel the connection between books and personal life but also enhances their reading and writing abilities and humanistic literacy.
此次征文活动不仅为中学生们提供了一个展示自我、交流思想的平台,也进一步激发了他们对阅读和写作的热情。通过深度探讨文学作品,学生们学会了从多角度思考问题,并勇于表达自己的见解。这不仅是个人成长的重要一步,也是培养未来社会所需独立思考者的关键途径。让我们期待更多学子在阅读与创作的路上绽放光彩。
This essay contest not only provided a platform for middle school students to showcase themselves and exchange ideas, but also further ignited their passion for reading and writing. By deeply exploring literary works, students learned to think from multiple perspectives and bravely express their insights. This is not only an important step in personal growth but also a key approach to nurturing independent thinkers needed by future society. Let us look forward to seeing more students shine brightly on the path of reading and creation.
