Question

How did your family know FDIS?

Answer

The children's great-grandfather was one of the earliest graduates of Fudan University, and he was a centennial alumnus of Fudan. His character and self-cultivation had a

great influence on the next generation of the family. We have always had a deep "Fudan Complex”, so when considering schools for our children, we prioritized FDIS, which was still young at that time.

Question

How does FDIS help build student’s character?

slide for English

Answer

FDIS is a small school, similar to the top liberal arts colleges in the United States. The school has a profound impact on shaping the character of its students. These influences come from subject inquiry-based learning

led by the teachers, school-organized activities, and from spending time with classmates. FDIS graduates share common traits: kindness, courtesy, independent thinking, and a special emphasis on relationships.

Question

Extracurricular activities are a very important piece of the U.S. application. Having gone through the process of applying to U.S. colleges for

both children, do you have any suggestion on how to organize extracurricular activities?

slide for English

Answer

此外,要格外重视学校的Service Learning(服务式学习)。

First and foremost make sure to take advantage of your school's on-campus activities, the list of activities on the brothers' college application submissions were all from on-campus activities. The use of their own specialties to participate in school activities not only saves time, but also allows the teacher to write a letter of recommendation to better understand you. In addition, pay special attention to the school's service learning, the U.S. application process, especially in the value of learning to give back to the community. Our two children have benefited a lot from the school's service learning, they use their own specialties to help the disadvantaged, the older brother teaches the children of migrant workers in

Shanghai to learn game design, and the younger brother creates therapeutic music for children with Down's Syndrome. The reflections they gained during their activities were shared in personal statement.

The most important principle of extracurricular activities is coherence, i.e. connect the dots. All activities should have a logical and sequential order, e.g. if you apply for "Computer Music Technology", it is better to have musical instruments/music theory/computer hardware and software learning, long-term music composition, music therapy/sound design practice, etc. related to the activities before and after.

Question

How do you as parents get involved in school activities?

slide for English

Answer

As parents of two children, we attended all of our child' school events. We would discuss possible programs with our children, help them find materials, and participate in volunteer training with them, and in the process we learned when to help and when to step back.

After high school, they no longer needed much help from us, but more often than not, we became a recorder, and when they were applying for college, it was helpful to provide them with some material to record and reflect on together.

Question

Can you describe your family’s approach to encouraging Jake’s academic

interests from a young age and fostered Jake’s love for learning and curiosity about the world?

slide for English

Answer

Jake is an independent learner. Since elementary school, we did not choose to dictate what he could learn, but allowed him to pursue his own interests. I remember we bought Jake more than 80 pieces of a comic

called “Young Scientists” when he was in elementary school - that must’ve planted a seed of motivation, seeing that he chose 4 High Level course in Math, Chemistry, Physics, and Language! After graduation, Jake also continued to be an IB tutor so he may help other students in achieving good IB scores!

Question

How did your family handle such circumstances when Jake faced academic

difficulties or setbacks? Could you please share some experiences in family education?

slide for English

Answer

To be honest, what the kids learn now in IB is far more advanced than what we learned in high school. I would say most parents would feel the same. Instead of academic support, making sure our kids feel comfortable in their studying environments are

a crucial aspect in solving these academic difficulties. When a significant setback is faced, instead of forcing kids to overcome it, we like to bring Jake out for activities, such as visiting the park or going to another country or province to have a short vacation. This clears his mind and often provides him with a new method of approaching a problem.

Question

Can you share any memorable moments or turning points in Jake's academic life at FDIS?

support significantly impacted Jake’s educational journey?

slide for English

Answer

It would definitely be when he received his first honor roll when he was in G9. During that specific instant, we knew that he grasped the essence of academic learning and what it means to have

good grades. However, we still believe that the top priority in high school was enjoying his youthful years and trying things he never tried before. As such, we constantly reminded him on just trying his best, which is already good enough for us.
