FDIS Reading Festival

In order to encourage personalized and diversified reading styles, open up students' horizons, and cultivate them to become lifelong learners, thinkers, and actors with international sentiments and perspectives, FDIS has actively advocated various kinds of Chinese and English reading activities in the current school year and held the reading festival performance on the Friday of the week of the World Book Day (April 23). Students

read according to the book lists recommended by the Chinese and English teachers at the opening ceremony of the first semester and presented their reading experiences through creative drawing and writing, play-acting and comedy, and multimedia production during the morning assembly of the reading week and at the performance.

英语阅读成果展

English Reading Products

Ms. Sophia Mousicos and Ms. Ashley Wei from the English Department kicked off FDIS’s reading festival, they shared the importance of reading books: “Reading not only enhances people’s vocabulary and comprehension skills but also nurtures their creativity and critical thinking. As we celebrate the joy of reading, it's fitting to honor the literary genius whose works continue to inspire generations: William Shakespeare. April 23rd marks both Shakespeare's birthday and the anniversary of his passing. That’s why we put it for World Book Day. Despite living over 400 years ago, Shakespeare's influence and relevance remain unparalleled. ”

So with this in mind, let's immerse ourselves in the magic of words as we reflect on our reading festival texts, and embark on a journey of discovery through the pages of literature together.

Book Review and Creative Writing

书评与创意写作

In this session, students shared their appreciation for literature through book reviews and creative writing. Emmy(G7) delivered a captivating book review on “The Song of Achilles” and explored the transformation of Achilles through his lover’s eyes to render him more relatable and empathetic. Emily(G7) shared her 23 diary entries in Liesel’s voice based on “The Book Thief”, creating an intimate connection with the protagonist through her detailed narrative. Maria(G7) read her creative writing piece inspired by “The Book Thief” as well, painting a vivid picture of a stark landscape where deceptive beauty ultimately succumbs to the unforgiving forces of nature, leaving behind a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between illusion and reality. Next, Summer(G10) presented her poem inspired by “The Remains of the Day”, prompting the audience to ponder the timeless question: what makes life worth living? Lastly, Yuyan(G10) and Andrea (G10)performed their song based on “My Brilliant Friend”. Their wonderful performance showed us the complex relationships between Lenù and Lila with the lines:

And to think that we used to be strangers

To think that we might soon be strangers

To think that we’ll never be strangers

To think that you can be the rest of my life

Creative Literary Visualizations

创意文学作品视觉展示

Students' artistic interpretations of literature were showcased in the creative literary visualization session. Students Yumi Ma (G6), Claudia Ma (G9), Vivien He (G9), Ellen Hu (G10), Katy Shen (G10), and Cindy Yeo (G10) unveiled their visual narratives through book covers and posters, interpreting classics with an innovative lens. The event then transitioned into an interactive panel with three students whose projects took a unique spin beyond traditional visual formats. Jesse Yang (G6) designed an intricate board game for "The Song of Achilles" that incorporated the theme of fate. Olivia Si shared her rationale for using caricature in the vibrant "Matilda" cartoon. Victoria Chen explained the striking color scheme that enhances the storytelling in her cartoon "The Book Thief." Each student artist offered their unique vision and thoughtful analysis of the texts.

Multimedia Products

多媒体作品

For the English Department’s multimedia category, two students were selected as having the best work: G6 Alice Wong and G8 Victoria Chen. Alice contributed a professional-grade podcast reviewing the book Born a Crime. It offered insightful observations as well as personal commentary on her opinions of the novel. Additionally, Victoria developed an animation video that was based on the novel Song of Achilles. She digitally sketched out most of the major scenes of the book and then combined them to make a visual retelling of the story. Overall, both these presenters demonstrated creativity in not only their selection of artistic medium but also the overall execution of their work.

The last activity of the Reading Festival was the award presentation and guest speaker session. Ms.Caroline Quan and Ms. Christine Shi presented the awards to the "Reading Stars" of the Chinese and English groups respectively, and Ms. Quan suggested that students should continue to make books their friends and let reading lead them to grow up, and to get close to books, so that they

can have a dialogue with the classics. In the process of reading good books, reading well, and enjoying reading, students can see themselves and others, meet history and reality, and foresee the universe and the future. Mr. Shi hoped that students would not only read the 16 books recommended by the Chinese and English teachers this year, but also take the initiative to look for good books and keep reading as a lifelong habit.
