Dyker Library is excited to host an exciting TED speaker, an avid reader and a published writer Dr. Qiujing (Lisa) Bu in the 4th installment of the Series of Conversations with Chinese Writers in New York on March 23rd, 2024. Ms. Bu will talk about her book Reading for Defiance: How to Use Books to Overcome Life's Challenges (Tsaiwei Publishing House), share her life stories, shed light on how her 2013 TED talk "How Books Can Open Your Mind" has become viral and garnered more than 6.5 million views so far, and how she managed to change her life and destiny by reading and writing.

As a young girl growing up in Hunan, Ms. Bu’s dream was to become a Huangmei Opera Singer. Instead, she became a white-collar worker in the prosperous Shenzhen after graduating from Nanjing University with a degree in Chinese Literature. She worked as a software engineer for a number of years before earning her MBA in Information System and a Ph.D. in Journalism and Communication from University of Wisconsin - Madison. After encountering unexpected changes and tragedy in life, Ms. Bu transcended herself by reading, restarted her life and career, and now works as a producer and host of the TED in Chinese podcast.

Although her semi-autobiographical book couldn’t pass censorship in the mainland of China, it was published with welcoming attention in Taiwan. Ms. Bu will share with the Dyker Library patrons about her journey of chasing the dream, the magic power cultivated from reading and writing, as well as how she was able to transcend the fate of deserving only Second Degree Happiness bestowed on many commoners, and how she now lives her ideal life in New York.

The publisher of Ms. Bu’s book, Mr. Chihcheng Hu will also be present at the library and engaged in the dialogue. Mr. Hu had taught Chinese literature in Taiwan and now runs the Taipei Tsaiwei Publishing House. He has also been publishing an anthology of Chinese literature works: Tsaiwei Series.

The dialogue will be hosted by Mr. Aiguo Ying, a Chinese writer based in Long Island. Another New York-based Chinese writer Ms. Sharon Shaohong Chang will also be present to share her thoughts of reading Dr. Bu's inspiring book. Both Dr. Bu’s book and some other books from Tsaiwei Publishing House will be available for purchase at the event.
