Investors are likely to be following the European Central Bank meeting on Thursday for its outlook on Eurozone interest rates, after the market was forced to radically rethink its forecasts in recent weeks.
The ECB is now overwhelmingly expected to cut the rate on its key deposit facility by 0.25 percentage points, to 3.25 per cent, at the two-day meeting in Frankfurt. But that outlook is a marked contrast to the consensus after September’s meeting.
Last month the central bank opted to cut borrowing costs for a second time this year, to 3.5 per cent. However the firm consensus among economists was that it would hold steady in October and only move again in December.

A top economic adviser to Donald Trump dismissed concerns that the former president would weaken the dollar or cut trade if re-elected, insisting he wants the US to remain the world’s reserve currency and uses tariffs as a negotiating tactic.
The comments from Scott Bessent, a 62-year-old hedge fund manager who made a windfall betting on the Japanese yen and British pound for liberal philanthropist George Soros, are relevant because he has emerged as a top Trump adviser on the economy and finance in recent years.
Although Bessent did not serve in the Trump administration between 2017 and 2021, he has given more than $2mn to his campaign in 2024, co-hosting fundraisers across America and in London. He is frequently spoken of as a possible Treasury secretary if Trump wins back the White House.

Social media use in teenagers is strongly correlated to higher anxiety and depression, according to new research, as NHS data shows the number of children being treated by mental health services has surged in recent years.
Academics from Oxford university, who are carrying out the largest global study of teenage mental health, said their initial research had found about 60 per cent of 16- to 18-year-olds spent between two and four hours a day on social media sites.
“We found a linear relationship between higher rates of anxiety and depression and time spent networking on social media sites”, said John Gallacher, professor of cognitive health, who is leading the work.

Since Israeli forces invaded south Lebanon and began battling Hizbollah fighters on the ground for the first time in two decades, there has been a noticeable absentee from the conflict: the Lebanese army.
The weakness of the Lebanese Armed Forces is testament to the fragile and fractured state of a country whose military has little or no capacity to defend against invaders. Indeed, it has not even been the most powerful force in the country: that title belongs to the Iran-backed militant group Hizbollah, which controls southern Lebanon.
“The Lebanese army has a different function than any other military,” said Sami Atallah, director of The Policy Initiative think-tank in Beirut. “The army doesn’t have the resources to defend its territory. Rather it’s used to maintain domestic stability.”
