Economists are anticipating what they say could be one of the worst jobs reports of Joe Biden’s presidency this Friday, just four days before the US presidential election.

Two deadly hurricanes and the Boeing strike will push down the headline figure for October payrolls, analysts say, temporarily obscuring the US labour market’s underlying health and denting its impressive recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

The median estimate in forecasts aggregated by Bloomberg for the non-farm payrolls report is a figure of 110,000 job gains, fewer than half of September’s increase and one the lowest totals since 2020.

Your Majesty, I was so looking forward to seeing you at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting but unfortunately owing to a diary clash I am unable to come . . .  Yours apologetically

The offices of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa must have faced quite the drafting challenge when their leaders chose to skip last week’s Commonwealth summit to attend instead a meeting hosted by Vladimir Putin.

Few though would dispute the strategic sense of their sidestep. It is an unambiguous reminder of the waning influence of western-led multilateral organisations in the global south. It is also another sign of the broader decline of what became hubristically known in the post-cold war decades as the international community.

Apple reported solid revenue growth in the past quarter as the tech group offered a bullish outlook on how new artificial intelligence features would drive an uptick in hardware sales into the holiday season.

The iPhone-maker’s revenue rose 6 per cent from a year ago to $94.9bn for the quarter to September 28, slightly above consensus estimates of $94.4bn.

Diluted earnings per share were $0.97, after the company took a one-time $10.2bn tax charge in connection with an EU ruling earlier this year. Net income was $14.7bn, compared to the $24.3bn estimated by analysts absent the charge.

Donald Trump has ignited another dispute about misogyny in the final days of his presidential campaign, telling a rally he would protect women and “do it whether the women like it or not”, drawing a sharp rebuke from Kamala Harris.

The Republican former president made the remarks at a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on Wednesday night, where he arrived in a rubbish truck wearing a hi-vis vest to highlight a gaffe made by Joe Biden, who the previous day had appeared to call Trump’s supporters “garbage”.

Trump has faced several accusations of sexual misconduct, and earlier this year was ordered by a judge to pay $83.3mn for defaming a woman who accused him of sexual assault. He has repeatedly said on the campaign trail that he would “protect” women if given another four years in the White House.
