Kamala Harris will deliver what her campaign has billed as a “closing argument” to the American people on Tuesday, in a final effort to win over voters in the country’s knife-edge presidential election.
The location for the speech, at the Ellipse just outside the White House, was chosen by Harris and her campaign to highlight the difference between the Democratic vice-president and her Republican opponent, former president Donald Trump.
The Ellipse was the site of Trump’s controversial speech on January 6 2021 in which he called on his supporters to protest against the result of the 2020 election. Hours later a mob marched up the National Mall to the US Capitol to try and stop the certification of Joe Biden’s electoral college victory.

Climate change-related hazards have caused death rates among older people to soar and a spike in the risk of infectious diseases as a result of heavy rainfall, an annual audit of health threats from global warming found.
The review by more than 100 scientists published in The Lancet underscores how climate change threatens both survival and quality of life. Low and middle-income countries are hit hardest, it said, as each fraction of a degree rise in global mean temperatures compounds the problems.
“This year’s stocktake of the imminent health threats of climate inaction reveals the most concerning findings yet in our eight years of monitoring,” said Marina Romanello, executive director of the project, known as the Lancet Countdown, at University College London.

Lex
In the prisoner’s dilemma, individuals who would do best by co-operating instead turn on one another, with less than optimal results. Something like that is playing out on a grand scale as giant technology companies such as Google parent Alphabet and Meta Platforms, both reporting earnings this week, duke it out for supremacy in artificial intelligence.
These so-called hyperscalers, part of a group that also includes Microsoft and Amazon, have gone all-in on servers and data centres used for cloud computing and large language models. By 2026 the foursome will have amassed nearly $1tn in capital expenditure over five years, based on consensus estimates from Visible Alpha.
Alphabet on Tuesday gave hints that the spending is tentatively paying off. Revenue grew by a forecast-beating 15 per cent year on year, and its cloud business expanded by 35 per cent. Alphabet chief Sundar Pichai says a quarter of Google’s new code is now written by AI.

Muhammad Yunus, Bangladesh’s interim leader, has accused the political party of ousted authoritarian leader Sheikh Hasina of exhibiting “all the characteristics of fascism”, saying it has “no place” for now in the country’s politics.
Yunus’s comments in an interview with the Financial Times make clear the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate favours taking a hard line on the former prime minister’s Awami League, Bangladesh’s oldest and biggest political party, after she was toppled by a student-led revolt in August.
Yunus also said his interim government would not immediately seek the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India, an approach that may avoid for the moment fuelling diplomatic tensions between Bangladesh and its giant neighbour.
