Kamala Harris and Donald Trump made their final appeals to undecided voters and sought to rally their supporters in swing states as polls showed the election going down to the wire in the final 48 hours.

Their presidential campaigns are battling for any edge following a bitter White House contest in which the candidates are running neck-and-neck in the key states that will decide the election.

After making a late-night appearance on the Saturday Night Live comedy show in New York, Harris was heading to Michigan to speak at a Black church, followed by appearances at a restaurant and a barber shop, and a large rally. Trump was due to campaign in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia.

With only days to go until the election, Kamala Harris made a closing pitch to voters that sought to balance joyful optimism with dire warnings about the threat posed by her Republican opponent.

“We have an opportunity in this election to finally turn the page on a decade of Donald Trump, who spends full time trying to keep us divided and afraid of each other,” the Democratic vice-president told an estimated crowd of 12,000 at a park in downtown Atlanta on Saturday.

It is a message Harris has hammered home in the final stretch of a presidential campaign powered by surging support from women and younger voters that would have seemed improbable at the start of the year.

Kemi Badenoch has been elected the new UK Conservative leader, with a vow to reset the party’s thinking and politics after its catastrophic election defeat this summer.

The former business secretary won 57 per cent of the vote, a decisive victory against her rival Robert Jenrick, the ex-immigration minister.

The turnout was 72.8 per cent of the party’s 131,680 members, according to 1922 committee chair Bob Blackman, who unveiled the result at an event in Westminster on Saturday.

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has sought to reassure nervous markets that his government will not become addicted to tax and spend after this week’s Budget, as he promised to carry out tough reforms to Britain’s “creaking” state.

Writing in the Financial Times after Labour’s first Budget in 14 years sparked a bond market sell-off, Starmer attempted to dispel fears that he would rely on more tax raises and borrowing to fund public services.

“Just as we cannot tax and spend our way to prosperity, nor can we simply spend our way to better public services,” he said. “That is why reform is an essential pillar of this government’s agenda.”
