Para 1: So I called Jane who gave me the lady's name and phone number.
The conversation between me and Karen flowed easily, as if we were old friends. “Ottawa has wonderful adoption opportunities,” Karen assured me, sharing stories of families who had found joy through the process. We arranged to meet in a cozy café to discuss the next steps. After hanging up, I looked around my apartment, where everything had been tailored to my solitary life but now on the edge of transformation. Then seeing the boxes of baby-proofing items and the toy horse at the corner, taking a deep breath, I called my sister, my voice trembling as I said, “I’m going to do it.”
Para 2: Two months later, I boarded a plane to Ottawa to take back my girl with the lady.
With spring in full bloom, the orphanage seemed modest yet inviting. As I walked through the rooms, my emotions surged with the laughter and cries of children tugging at my heartstrings. Then, Karen guided me into a room where a baby girl with dark curls and bright eyes played with her toy horse. The moment our gazes locked, I heard a monumental sound in my heart that echoed through my entire being, reverberating with the realization that I was really ready for everything. Fighting back my tears, I asked softly, “What’s her name, Karen?” “She is Mary.”
