enjoy your read!

In the yard, Mary and her 6-year-old sister were playing happily, their laughter filling the yard. Seeing this scene, I smiled but my mind wandered back to ten years ago.

At that time, I had been on my own for a couple of years, and life had settled into a comfortable pattern. One night, I sat in front of the TV watching a documentary about abandoned baby girls. Two reporters had gone undercover across the country and filmed baby girls being abandoned. Some were left in parks or in the wild. Even those in orphanages (孤儿院) were weak and sickly. They were considered a burden.

Those images played in my head for weeks afterward. One morning, my sister called from Toronto to chat. I told her about the show and how I felt.

"Go," she said. "Go and bring at least one home."

"Are you crazy?" I replied.

"You love kids," she said.

I turned my sister's words over in my mind. I wouldn't do it, I thought. My life was good, full and very busy. I couldn't do anything other than send money to some organizations. But the thoughts and images stayed in my mind until I finally picked up the phone and called the government to find out more information.

The first step was to complete a home study. These were done by a specialized social worker who would judge if I was suitable to be a parent. I decided to schedule the home study and then determine afterward whether or not to go through with the process.

In early February 2014, I met with Jane who was a social worker four times. Every time we met, she encouraged me to adopt and said she knew a lady who could help me. But I wasn't ready to adopt.

During that time, a local shop held a contest. I won a full box of items to make a home baby-safe. They had another contest. This time, it was for a baby's rocking horse. I won that, too. Were these signs?

Para 1: So I called Jane who gave me the lady's name and phone number.

Para 2: Two months later, I boarded a plane to Ottawa to take back my girl with the lady.
