1)He was given the defence portfolio despite having no military background, which rankled with some of his top brass. If an event or situation rankles, it makes you feel angry or bitter afterwards, because you think it was unfair or wrong.  brass这个词在新闻里也经常出现,解释如下:In the army or in other organizations, the brass are the people in the highest positions.

2)A popular thing to do in Wuzhen is to pose for photos dressed in traditional hanfu clothing - as if you have really been transported back hundreds of years.

3)After arriving, they spend an hour getting their hair done in an elaborate imperial-era style - and they are full of praise for Wuzhen's classical beauty.

4)He says general uncertainty about the Chinese economy is putting more emphasis on saving, so people are looking for good value options. good value +名词,是个很好用的表达。我以前总忍不住要用定语从句,比如options that offer good value for money。

5)Then there are other potential turnoffs for those considering travelling in China, like the country's state-of-the-art phone app payment and booking systems which work very smoothly for Chinese citizens and residents, but which can be an enormous headache if you have just arrived.

1)One that is distasteful: The evening was a real turnoff.

2) Something that causes loss of interest.
