On October 18th, students from Pre-DP and DP1 of the IB programme at CBS High School stepped out of the classroom and into the Suzhou Museum and the historical and cultural street of Pingjiang Road for a fruitful Theory of Knowledge (TOK) field trip. During this trip, students conducted field investigations and personal experiences to delve into the relevant questions of how TOK is reflected in the world around us, laying a solid foundation for their TOK exhibition and essay writing.
Upon entering Suzhou Museum, students were immediately captivated by its unique architectural style.Master I.M. Pei skillfully blended tradition with modernity, endowing this cultural palace with a distinct charm. Every corner of the museum is filled with the breath of art, and every exhibit carries the weight of history.
On the first floor of the West Corridor, the Secret-Color Porcelain Lotus Bowl, with its exquisite shape and unique craftsmanship, became the focus of students' attention. This piece of porcelain not only showcases the wisdom and ingenuity of ancient craftsmen, but also prompted students to think about "What characteristics of knowledge affect its reliability?" Through observation and information research, students explored how knowledge is passed down and confirmed through the form and craftsmanship of cultural relics.
The Pearl Stupa in the museum is even more dazzling. Its exquisite pearl decorations and superb craftsmanship allowed students to gain a deeper understanding of Buddhist culture and feel the ancient craftsmen's pursuit of ultimate beauty. This sparked deep contemplation on the question, "How might the context in which knowledge is presented affect whether it is accepted or rejected?"
In the painting and calligraphy exhibition hall, each scroll is like a historical epic, recording the thoughts and emotions of ancient people. While appreciating the paintings, students also pondered the historical and cultural backgrounds behind them. The exhibits, organized and presented by the museum according to themes, well addressed the question, "How does the way we organize or categorize knowledge affect what we know?" Students can more intuitively feel the impact of knowledge organization on cognition through immersive experiences.
Leaving Suzhou Museum, students stepped into the China Kunqu Museum on Pingjiang Road. Here, they closely experienced the charm of traditional Chinese opera art and also realized the importance of integrating art and humanistic literacy into daily life.
Students carefully studied every detail on the scores, trying to capture the emotions and artistic conception of the ancients when creating Kunqu. The auxiliary presentation of modern technological means allowed students to fully appreciate the unique charm of Kunqu art. The emergence of ancient stages and the imagination of ancient people watching Kunqu opera performances here, during this exploration journey of opera art,"What challenges do the dissemination and/or communication of knowledge face?" this issue has been linked to students' real-life experiences, inspiring further reflection on the various problems that art forms face in disseminating knowledge.
This field trip not only allowed students to appreciate the charm of historical culture but also deepened their understanding of the IB programme through practice. A Pre-DP student exclaimed, "Through this trip, I experienced the interdisciplinary nature of IB. While appreciating the cultural relics, I also pondered their historical and cultural backgrounds, and when I returned home, I also did further information search and reading, which gave me a deeper understanding of TOK. This is a completely different experience from visiting any museum or exhibition in my past."
Another DP1 student said, "This trip made me feel the diversity and richness of culture, and it also made me cherish the broad learning platform provided by the IB programme even more. The observation, filming, thinking, and discussion on this day have provided evidence and inspiration for some of the previously unfamiliar knowledge issues in class, and opened up perspectives for problem exploration. I need to take advantage of the opportunity to record them, hoping to be helpful for future TOK learning and assessment."
Overall, this TOK field trip provided us with a comprehensive learning experience. Through visiting the Suzhou Museum and other historical and cultural sites, we have deepened our understanding of the TOK, truly felt the unique charm of the IBDP in emphasizing interdisciplinary learning, and better understood the importance of cultural heritage.
