Pang Qingming [China]

Beyond Mirror Images or Three Dimensions (group poems)

Climbing High

With intrinsic particles, an empty body,

with rest on the right path of endurance,

the window of opportunity opens, and the path of ascent

reveals its mysterious allure.

With a rainbow, encountering

the overflowing negative ions, with positive

genes, life invites,

repeatedly, and is forever inviting.

With my middle-aged wife, charming still,

somewhat a crutch for my life from now on,

my son, raised up by love and expectation,

is about to leap into his vast future world.

Time, as for me, may become

lengthier, denser, or scarcer.

Besides climbing high and looking far, I also need to

brew a panacea to console myself—

Masquerade

I always leave halfway,

getting drunk and making a scene.

The lightning’s lost grip

upset the ink box.

The rain that stopped halfway

burst through walls, then an unexpected romance in a wink.

Red lips in deep love

wept for the lost boat.

The burning fat waited for a chance to return,

and the present peace was heart-wrenching.

The folded dream

was approaching the masquerade of climax.

Candlelight peeling off,

lizards survived through the disaster

Birds

Birds also know how to blaze a trail

for the bewildered insects in the dawn,

the butterflies stumbling onto fence,

a lock of breeze slipping through the ravine,

the folded sleepiness.

The birds’ imperial councils always

go smoothly as fish does in water.

They compress their bodies in just the right positions,

or raise their decibel level as a warning

to safeguard their honor,

and also to do their part for the etiquette of the younger generation.

The birds’ orchestral music

is perfectly in tune,

adapting to the ever-changing patterns and the unknown fates.

The birds’ side somersaults

implant amazement into the taut nerves—

Travelling

I’m going to travel, and no mantis shall hinder.

The boat of Saharan has shed its dusty shroud,

licking the rare mist with delight

The marshal from the haven with scallions atop,

the bouncing kangaroos,

and the giraffes on stilts

travel together.

On this journey grand

Flamingos seek alkaline lakes.

Penguins abandon their gentlemanly demeanor

to catch deep-sea shrimps.

Snow geese on a long quest,

with their hearts ablaze, throw themselves onto their destined land.

The arrows shot from humpback whales’ spines

are like the water spilled, cannot be retrieved.

Travelling: my only luggage.

A call from the bones, an exchange of blood.

Like a punctual armored car, I roam

through distant mountains and nearby waters,

to the dreamland by the Seine,

to the springtime in Prague,

to reconnect with the armless Venus,

to mourn the old steam engines of England,

to kneel before the ruins of Yucatan,

to toll the death knell of freedom along the America’s walls,

to encounter a caterpillar

in New Guinea’s tropical rainforests,

In Syria's ruins, where sorrow lingers

to rescue the Tower of Babel.

But as for the orange windows of Amsterdam,

and the vast smoke of Pattaya, be careful—

Hollow Tube

I wish to be a hollow tube,

playing a beautiful melody,

sounding like lofty mountains rising and vast water flowing.

Exquisite holes, as if pointed out by immortals,

bewildering corridors, cyclic mechanisms,

and rainbow flying over the sacred land of spirit.

Mazes with automatic navigation,

love encountered in the mild spring,

the intrinsic integrity, and the overflowing energy.

The last drop of ink has been used up,

and the last note has been exhausted.

The soul of a flower, starlight, a fleeting glimpse of awesomeness.
