Coming to Terms (and other four poems)
The earth vomited up the body of Abel three times
because it had never tasted the blood of man
and cried out to God when it knew its source.
Since that time both man and earth
have become jaded to the act and its taste.
When one man drops another in death
the earth opens its maw to receive.
Shame became buried in someone’s coffin
somewhere along the way and the earth
yields to the shovel of the grave digger.
Even God has stopped shaking His head.
Él Argentino
for Luis Benítez
swirls of smoke rise into the air around him
stones crumble in his mind as he hears
the intimate whispers of mysterious shadows
words colored with meanings and nuance
meant for ears more delicate than his own
distant shores of thought tickle the horizon
of his experience with palms of gratitude
while he hammers musical notes into his words
allowing wooden emotions to splinter
and air reach heartwood for the first time
since he was a sapling in the rain
Raising Cane
the edges of the sky are disguised
hiding behind swirls and billows
of smoke. Dust devils roam the fields
blackened like catfish by fires
clearing away spent sugar cane.
Vast clearings between shaggy fields
dirt black like you were growing celery.
Been going on fifty generations,
not fifty more. Turns out sugar
isn’t good to breath and winter here
means black snow (much worse than yellow).
Passing through I see the cruel beauty
the illusions, the metaphorical applications
of universal import, but I don’t see faces
hear the coughs, pay their doctor fees.
Bad passes with the good everyday
and hardly anyone knows the difference.
Another Word Cancer
like battery acid foaming and chalking
remarks that never got wiped off
careless verbal vomit that dried
on the face of a relationship
friends behind walls of words
hoping they don’t fall back on them
time is a construct, death a destruct
life is a conduct love is a product
whatever you feed lives
whatever you ignore starves to death
Catcher Getting Caught
Stretchers are waiting for the unwary
for some fool who knows he shouldn’t’ve
done what he did and now looking
at his exposed bones wishing
he had listened to himself.
The watched pot catches its breath
then whistles for the check.
Informed too late to free the tides
to their own devises they watched
in helpless horror as the shoreline
suddenly reached out in front of them.
Good will was shown.
The cavern was well lit
but darkness drank it away.
Motion detectors choked on data
and sirens broke out like an off key choir.
