Ayo Ayoola-Amale [Nigeria]

Frozen (and other two poems)

I have been the sane hermit, still

dragging on nicotine walls

swallowing sunrise through my dark lungs

I’d been

scrubbing heaps of laundry

clocking rounds pounding fufu

like am a pounded refuse, among the dumpsters

echoed in a tumultuous blast

of cracked arms that hang

in a bandaged cell

broken,

empty,

gone astray partner

in a frozen lake

turning out tortures like breathing

I knew you the dope burn

flogged in the wind with knives clinging to my skin,

planting bombs spilling from your mouth

real like life itself

only because

I’m a woman

watching sunset in a jailhouse:

Give me the truth.

Give me the truth.

Ode to Friendship

That you could be THIS HUMAN

to lend an ear in the forests

when fire tears through a thousand summers’

That you could be this human

to make a smile

when mountains crack the sun

of the seasons.

That you could be this human

to share the laughter

of beautiful springs on a frozen lake

And be so glad to lend a hand

in a hut full of snow,

to always listen

in storm clouds tight rage.

That you could be this moment, true and deep-

TO ME.

That you could be this time

is pure gold.

Air Clots

What’s a polar bear?

dinosaur: Maybe it’s a comet slammed on Mother Earth?

Our wildfires, wildfires strung with a

huge asteroid.

Is the earth needed?

Here the stalling sunlight. A mountain struck every tree.

Is the sea needed?

Only the volcanos, the plastics, fossil fuels.

You, I, all of us?  Can we see the Dodo bird?

Who owns the fur, the oil? Who's talking about Sea Cow?

Pandas may be seen in picture books only.

We see Giraffes exit like Labrador duck,

Like mountain locusts, like golden toads, like passenger pigeons

A dying ecosystem, a pandemic of sickness. Me and You.

Yes. Soon, Elephants will only be seen on discovery channels.

Nukes and bereavement far and wide.

crooked pesticide,

roots, trunk shattered

ice broken into floods, the leaves failed.

The cycle, the sounds of cannon

storm worse

a salad of hectares of

poisoned vegetables sprayed

glyphosate

and, GMO fields in plastic bowls

as yam porridge.

For now,

we still have our arteries looted.
