Gunnar Odhner [Sweden]
The unseen sky (and other three poems)
In my summerhouse
I have a glassdoor
reflecting the sky, the clouds
the birches and spruce trees
in perfect duplication
Birds sometimes mistake
the glass reflection for the real sky
and seek a rest on the branches
of imaginary trees
In their innocent pursuit
they fly from a safe trajectory
into the door at full speed
and break their necks
How this resembles
the lives of human beings
The reflection of language
leading us astray into theories
of God and nature
the real sky denied
unseen
The outsider
Look at me
as a somewhat retarded man
walking around his palm-sized garden
repeating the same message
as retards do
Too simpleminded to be
of use anywhere, too strange
too terse to amuse
any company
Just an odd person who at night
looks at the billions of stars
as if he himself put
them there
God’s silence
God is identical
with his self, one with himself
and that is the reason
for his silence
We are both identical
and nonidentical with
our selves, divided
and undivided
at the same time
That is why we
can speak
The word divides and heals
visible and invisible
mute and singing
Humans beings
who are identical
with themselves
and their words
will also be
gods
Hymn
When I am alone
the song is heard in its full
the bruised song, the scarred song
in all its astounding glory
Its wings spread wide
over mountains and horizons
The bliss of silence
The bliss of being alone
makes paradise come close
with the fragrance, colours and all
its truthful beings
Holy day, holy silence
when the holy song
chimes with all its different voices
piercing my heart
as one
