Sun Wukong fell from the clouds and informed his master in detail about how the Taishang Laojun had collected the treasures.
Tang Seng repeatedly expressed his gratitude, his faith growing stronger, and with a devout heart, he resolutely continued westward despite the dangers ahead.
He mounted his horse, Zhu Bajie shouldered the luggage, Sha Seng held the reins, and Sun Wukong wielded his golden staff, clearing the way as they descended from the high mountains.
The hardships of the journey, enduring wind and rain, were beyond words.
After traveling for quite a while, they encountered another mountain blocking their path.
Tang Seng called out from his horse, “Disciples, look at that mountain; it is steep and treacherous. Be very cautious, for I fear there may be monsters trying to harm us again.”
Wukong replied, “Master, don’t think too much. As long as we remain calm and keep our spirits up, we will be fine.”
Tang Seng sighed, “Disciple, why is the journey to the Western Heaven so difficult? I remember leaving Chang'an City, going through spring, summer, autumn, and winter; it has been four or five years already. Why haven’t we arrived yet?”
Sun Wukong laughed, “Oh, it’s still early! Still early! We are like we haven’t even stepped out of the gate yet!”
Zhu Bajie said, “Brother, don’t tell lies. Is there such a big door in the human world?”
Sun Wukong replied, “Brother, we are just like we are still spinning around inside the house!”
Sha Seng chuckled, “Elder brother, don’t boast to scare me; where is such a big house? Besides, there’s nowhere to buy such large beams!”
Sun Wukong said, “Brothers, in my view, if we take the blue sky as the roof, the sun and the moon as windows, and the four mountains and five peaks as beams, then the world is just like a spacious hall!”
Zhu Bajie remarked, “Alright! Alright! Let’s just say we’ll return after walking for a while.”
Sun Wukong replied, “Don’t say such things; just follow me!”
The powerful Sun Wukong carried his golden staff horizontally, leading Tang Seng as they cleared the mountain path, moving forward.
Tang Seng, riding on his horse, saw a magnificent mountain scene in the distance.
The peak rose high, seemingly reaching the handle of the North Star, while the treetops appeared to connect with the sky.
In the misty smoke, one could often hear the cries of monkeys at the mountain valley entrance; under the lush and chaotic tree shade, the cries of cranes among the pines could often be heard.
The mountain spirits capable of calling the wind and rain stood by the stream, teasing the woodcutters; while the foxes that had become spirits sat on the cliffs, frightening the hunters.
This mountain was indeed wondrous! Look at the towering cliffs from all sides, and the surrounding area was exceedingly perilous.
The uniquely shaped tall pines resembled green canopies, while the withered old trees hung with vines.
The spring water flowed down like a cascade, and the chill could raise the hairs on one's body; the peaks towered high, with the cool breeze stinging the eyes and startling the soul.
Occasionally, the roar of tigers could be heard, and the calls of mountain birds were often heard.
Fawns moved in groups through the thorns, leaping back and forth; while the roe deer and rabbits searched for food, running back and forth.
Standing on the grassy slope, one could see no other travelers; deep in the valley, there were wolves all around.
This place surely wasn't where the Buddha practiced; it was entirely the realm of flying birds and roaming beasts.
Tang Seng entered this deep mountain with trepidation, feeling extremely desolate. He pulled the reins and called out, “Wukong! When I first vowed to climb the mountain, everyone sent me off from the city.
On the way, I encountered 'the three-edged weapon', urging the 'Aristolochia' to move quickly.
Searching for 'herbs' on the slopes and in the valleys, climbing mountains and crossing hills to pay homage to 'Fuling'.
I, like 'Zhu Li', am pure and upright; when will I return to the court to report to the emperor?”
Sun Wukong listened, laughing coldly, “Master, you don’t need to worry. Don’t be anxious; just trust and move forward, and you will surely succeed.”
The master and his disciples admired the mountain scenery as they walked, unknowingly watching the sun set.
At that moment: “In the ten-mile-long pavilion, no travelers are seen; in the nine-layered heavens, the stars shine bright.”
All the boats on the eight rivers have returned to port; seven thousand counties have closed their doors.
Officials from the six palaces and five residences have all returned home, and fishermen from the four seas and three rivers have put away their fishing rods.
The bells and drums of the two towers have sounded, and a full moon illuminates the world.
Tang Seng, looking far off on his horse, spotted layered pavilions and majestic halls in the mountain hollow.
Tang Seng said, “Disciples, the sky is getting dark; fortunately, there are pavilions over there not far away. It must be a temple or monastery where we can stay the night and continue our journey tomorrow.”
Sun Wukong replied, “Master is right. Let’s not rush; I’ll go take a look first.”
Sun Wukong leaped into the air to check, and indeed saw a temple gate.
He saw: the brick walls shaped like an eight-character, painted with red powder, and the doors on either side nailed with gold nails.
Layered pavilions were hidden by the mountains, and heavy palaces were concealed in the hills.
The Ten Thousand Buddha Pavilion faced the Tathāgata Hall, while the Morning Sun Pavilion responded to the Great Hero Gate.
A seven-story pagoda was shrouded in mist, and three Buddha statues glowed brilliantly.
The platform of Manjushri Bodhisattva faced the shrine of the Kṣitigarbha (the protector of the temple), while Maitreya's hall was adjacent to the Great Compassion Buddha Hall.
Outside the pavilion, green light danced, and purple clouds rose over the Void Step Pavilion.
The courtyard surrounded by pine trees was lush and green, and the abbot’s meditation hall was tranquil.
Elegantly quiet and suitable for entertainment, the paths seemed to welcome visitors.
In the meditation area, monks were giving teachings, while the music room had many instruments playing.
On the Miao Gao Platform, night-blooming cereus fell, and before the Dharma platform, palm leaves (Buddhist scriptures) were growing.
It was indeed a sacred Buddhist site hidden by the forest, embraced by mountain peaks.
Half the walls flickered with lights, and a row of incense smoke and mist blurred the view.
After Sun Wukong landed from the clouds, he told Tang Seng, “Master, it’s indeed a temple; we can borrow a place to stay. Let’s go.”
Tang Seng loosened the reins and headed straight for the temple gate.
Sun Wukong asked, “Master, what temple is this?”
Tang Seng replied, “My horse’s hooves have just stopped; my feet haven’t even left the stirrups, and you ask me what temple this is? It’s really unreasonable!”
Sun Wukong said, “You, Master, have been a monk since childhood, and you must have studied Confucian books before explaining the Buddhist scriptures. Your language and reasoning are quite proficient, and you received favor from Emperor Taizong of Tang. With such big words on the door, how could you not recognize them?”
Tang Seng scolded, “You mischievous monkey! You really lack knowledge in your words! I was just riding west, illuminated by the sun, and although there are characters on the door, they are covered in dust, so I didn’t see them.”
Hearing this, Sun Wukong bent down, then suddenly grew taller by two zhang, and
brushed away the dust, saying, “Master, please look.”
There were five big characters written above: “Imperially Established Baolin Temple.”
Sun Wukong returned to his original form and said, “Master, who will go in to borrow a place to stay?”
Tang Seng said, “I will go in. You all look unrefined, speak coarsely, and have stubborn and arrogant personalities. If you offend the monks here and they don’t let us stay, that wouldn’t be good.”
Tang Seng put down his staff, loosened his cloak, tidied his clothes, and, with his hands together, directly walked into the temple gate.
Inside, he saw a pair of golden Vajra statues sitting high on either side, looking majestic and somewhat fearsome.
One had a dark blue face with beard like steel needles, looking alive; the other had a frown and round eyes, appearing quite clever.
The left side had a fist like a diamond, protruding and as solid as wrought iron;
左边的金刚拳头突出,如生铁一样;
the right side had a large palm, thick as red copper.
Their golden armor shone brightly,
and the bright helmets and embroidered sashes fluttered in the wind.
Inside the temple, there were indeed many Buddha statues,
and the incense burners made of stone were filled with vibrant incense.
Tang Seng saw this and sighed, saying, “In our Eastern land, if someone also made such a large Buddha statue from clay for people to burn incense and worship, then I, as a disciple, would not need to go to the West.”
Just as he was sighing, he walked into the second layer of the mountain gate and saw the statues of the Four Heavenly Kings: the Guardian King, the Hearing King, the Growth King, and the Wide-Eyed King.
These represent the idea of favorable weather and good harvests according to the northeastern and southwestern directions.
After entering the second gate, he also saw four tall pine trees, each lush and green like a canopied umbrella.
Suddenly, he looked up and saw the Grand Hall of Great Strength.
Tang Seng joined his hands in prayer, bowing sincerely.
After finishing his bow, he stood up, walked around the Buddha altar, and came to the back door, where he saw a statue of Guanyin sitting in meditation, facing the South Sea.
On the walls were intricately carved figures of shrimp, fish, crabs, and turtles, their heads and tails sticking out as they played in the waves of the sea.
Tang Seng nodded several times in amazement and said, “How pitiful! These scaled creatures worship the Buddha, yet why are people unwilling to cultivate themselves?”
While he was admiring this, he saw a Taoist priest walk out from the third gate.
The Taoist, upon seeing Tang Seng’s unusual appearance and distinguished demeanor, hurriedly walked over and asked, “Master, where are you from?”
Tang Seng replied, “I am here sent by the Emperor of the Eastern Tang to the West to worship the Buddha and seek scriptures. I have arrived at your esteemed place, and as night falls, I request to stay for the night.”
The Taoist said, “Master, please don’t blame me; I cannot make the decision. I am just a worker here, sweeping and ringing the bell. There is an old monk in charge of temple affairs. I will go inside to report to him. If he agrees to let you stay, I will come out to invite you in; if he doesn’t, I cannot delay you.”
Tang Seng said, “Thank you for your trouble.”
The Taoist hurriedly ran to the abbot and reported, “Master, there is a person outside.”
The monk immediately stood up, changed his clothes, adjusted his monk's hat, draped on his cassock, and quickly opened the door to greet him, asking the Taoist, “What kind of person is it?”
The Taoist pointed and said, “Isn’t there a person behind the main hall?”
They saw Tang Seng, bare-headed, wearing a robe made of twenty-five cloth pieces, and stepping into a pair of mud-covered sandals, leaning against the back door.
The monk saw him and was very angry, saying, “You Taoist deserve a beating! Don’t you know I am a monk official? I only greet distinguished guests from the city who come to burn incense. Why did you misreport this situation and make me receive him? Look at his appearance; he doesn’t seem like a respectable monk, but rather a wandering monk. Now that it’s late, he probably wants to stay. How can we allow such a person to disturb our abbot? Just let him squat in the front corridor!”
With that, he turned to leave.
Tang Seng, hearing this, was filled with tears and said, “How pitiful! How pitiful! This is what it means to be looked down upon after leaving one’s hometown! I have been a monk since I was young, never having bad thoughts or desires, and when I read the Buddhist scriptures, I do not harbor anger that disrupts my meditation; I have never thrown bricks or tiles to destroy temples, nor scraped gold dust from the Buddha’s face. Alas! How pitiful! I don’t know if I offended heaven and earth in a past life, causing me to always encounter unkind people in this life! You, monk, do not keep us for the night, yet why say such cruel words to make us squat in the front corridor? If this reaches Sun Wukong, it won’t end well for you; that monkey will come in and break your legs with a single blow!”
Tang Seng continued, “Let it be, let it be; as the saying goes, one should prioritize etiquette. I will go in and ask him what he means.”
Tang Seng followed the footprints and entered the abbot’s door, where he saw the monk sitting inside in a huff, unsure if he was chanting scriptures or writing rituals for others, with piles of papers on the table.
Tang Seng did not dare to go any further, so he stood in the courtyard and bowed deeply, calling out loudly, “Old Abbot, I greet you!”
The monk was somewhat impatient at his entrance and returned a cold greeting, asking, “Where are you from?”
Tang Seng said, “I am sent by the Emperor of the Eastern Tang to the West to pay respects to the living Buddha and seek the true scriptures. Passing through this blessed land, night is falling, and I request to stay for the night; I will leave before dawn.”
Only then did the monk rise and say, “Are you the Tang Sanzang?”
Tang Seng said, "I don't dare to claim that; I am indeed the one."
The monk said, "Since you are going to the Western Heaven for scriptures, how come you don't even know the way?"
Tang Seng replied, "I have never traveled this road before."
The monk said, "Go directly west for about four or five li, and you'll find a place called Thirty-Li Inn, where you can find food and lodging. It's not convenient for me to accommodate you distant travelers."
Tang Seng clasped his hands together and said, "Abbot, as the ancients said, temples, monasteries, and shrines are inns for us monks. Upon seeing the temple gate, there should be three sheng of rice offered. Why won't you accommodate us? What is the reason?"
The monk replied, "You wandering monk, why are you so glib? It’s inconvenient here, I cannot accommodate you."
Outside, Sun Wukong grew impatient waiting; upon hearing this, his anger flared. He picked up his golden staff, smashed the door to pieces, and entered, shouting, "Monk, stop talking! Quickly arrange a meal and let my master rest!"
The monk was terrified, trembling on the ground, and cried, "Oh dear! This is a quiet Zen temple; I cannot accommodate such fierce individuals!"
Sun Wukong shouted, "You monk, truly do not know what's good for you! My master is a high monk from the Tang Dynasty, traveling to the Western Heaven to pay respects and seek scriptures. You keep refusing his request to stay the night. If you keep talking nonsense, I'll demolish your temple!"
Seeing Sun Wukong's ferocity, the monk had no choice but to stand up and instruct the attendant to prepare a meal and arrange rooms for Tang Seng and his disciples to stay.
At night, Tang Seng gazed at the bright moon in the sky, feeling a surge of emotions, and casually recited a long ancient-style poem: "The bright orb hangs like a precious mirror in the sky, reflecting the mountains and rivers in their entirety."
"At this moment, the brightness is the same for all ten thousand miles; tonight is the brightest of the year."
"Like a frosted cake floating far from the sea, yet resembling an icy wheel hanging in the azure sky."
"In a lonely guest room with a cold window, the old man sleeps in a mountain village inn."
"Suddenly arriving at the Han courtyard, I am startled by the autumn hair; just reaching the Qin tower, I hasten the evening curtains."
"Yuan Liang's poetry is passed down in Jin history, while Yuan Hong is sleepless, drifting on the river boat."
"The light floating on the cup's surface is cold and feeble, reflecting clearly in the courtyard, healthy as a celestial being."
"Every window echoes with verses of white snow, and each courtyard plays with icy strings."
"Tonight I quietly enjoy this mountain temple; when will I return to my homeland together?"
Sun Wukong, hearing this, stepped forward and replied, "Master, you only know the brilliance of the moonlight and miss your hometown, yet you do not understand the meaning of the moon itself; this is the principle of the innate natural laws."
"On the thirtieth day of each month, the yang energy dissipates completely, and the yin energy becomes full, hence it is completely dark; this is called 'New Moon'."
"At this time, the moon intersects with the sun; between the New Moon and the Full Moon, it begins to absorb sunlight and generate light."
"On the third day of the new month, the yang energy first appears; on the eighth day, the yang energy increases, and half of the moon is illuminated by the sun, looking like a straight string, thus called 'First Quarter'."
"On the fifteenth day, the yang energy is fully three parts bright, thus it is a perfect circle, called 'Full Moon'."
"On the sixteenth day, a yin emerges; on the twenty-second day, a second yin emerges, so the moon appears straight like a string, hence called 'Last Quarter'."
"On the thirtieth day, the yin energy returns to balance, reverting to the 'New Moon' state."
"This is the essence of cultivating the innate way."
"If we can carefully nurture this yin and yang energy, returning to the true essence will lead us to see the Buddha and return to our original mind."
The poem says, "After the First Quarter and before the Last Quarter, the medicinal properties are mild and the atmosphere is full."
"Harvest and return to refine in the furnace, with sincere heart cultivating the fruit to reach the Western Heaven."
The Sand Monk smiled and said, "Elder brother, what you said makes some sense, but you only mentioned that the waxing moon represents yang and the waning moon represents yin, while in yin there is half of yang, corresponding to gold in water."
"But you didn't mention that water and fire have their own fates, and it's all up to Mother Earth to balance them."
"When the three are in harmony and unity, there will be no disputes; water flows in the Yangtze River, and the moon hangs in the sky."
Upon hearing this, the elder was suddenly enlightened.
As the saying goes, "When one principle is understood, a hundred can be grasped; once the principle of non-birth is realized, it leads to the path of becoming an immortal."
Zhu Bajie stepped forward and grabbed his master, saying, "Master, don’t listen to their nonsense; it will waste your sleep. This moon: although it sometimes wanes, it will soon be full again, just like I am not perfect since birth."
"When it’s meal time, they complain about my big belly, and when I take a bowl, they say I drool."
"He is blessed with intelligence earned through cultivation, while I have accumulated fate through my dullness."
"I believe once you obtain the true scriptures, you can settle the karma of three lifetimes and ascend directly to heaven!"
Tang Seng said, "Alright, my disciples have worked hard on the road; let’s rest first, and I will read this scripture."
Sun Wukong replied, "Master, you are mistaken; you have been a monk since childhood. Which scripture from your childhood are you not familiar with?"
"However, you received the order from the Tang Emperor to go to the Western Heaven to pay respects to Buddha and seek the great scriptures."
"Now, your achievements are still incomplete, you haven't seen Buddha, nor have you obtained the scriptures; which scripture are you reading?"
Tang Seng said, "Since I left Chang'an, I have been traveling daily, constantly on the move. The scriptures I learned as a child may have faded from my memory. Fortunately, I have some free time tonight to review them."
Sun Wukong said, "In that case, let’s go to sleep first."

Tang Seng closed the Zen hall door, lit the silver lamp, opened the scripture, and silently read and recited.
It was just at that moment when the drum sounded from the tower, the surroundings were quiet, and the lights on the fishing boats along the river were extinguished.
