Improvisation has opened on September 20. On October 26, for the second public event of our exhibition programme, we will invite musician Wei Wei (VAVABOND) and Globe Discount Center (GDC) on site. In the first half, Wei Wei will share with us on the book she translated, Improvisation: Its Nature and Practice in Music (by Derek Bailey), and elaborate the idea of improvisation: its emergence in various music genre, its essential role in music, and freely improvised music as methodology. She will also review on her own music practice under the moniker VAVABOND, including her notebook improvisation, ambient improvisation group Mind Fiber, psychedelic noise band Vagus Nerve. In the second half, Globe Discount Center from Shanghai and USA will bring us a 60-minute set. Since 2019, he has begun to deal with sound of TV sets, tape players, and other consumer gear run through a mixer. This show is part of his Beijing tour. On the event day, we will also bring audiences an online tour of the exhibition Improvisation on our WeChat video channel. Welcome to stay tuned.

The word improvisation is actually very little used by improvising musicians. There is a noticeable reluctance to use the word and some improvisors express a positive dislike for it. I think this is due to its widely accepted connotations which imply that improvisation is something without preparation because they know from their own experience that it is untrue. They know that there is no musical activity which requires greater skill and devotion, preparation, training and commitment.
——Introduction (page 5)
A lot of improvisors find improvisation worthwhile, I think, because of the possibilities. Things that can happen but perhaps rarely do. One of those things is that you are ‘taken out of yourself’. Something happens which so disorientates you that, for a time, which might only last for a second or two, your reactions and responses are not what they normally would be. You can do something you didn’t realise you were capable of. Or you don’t appear to be fully responsible for what you are doing.

VAVABOND, aka Wei Wei, graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Living in Beijing. Notebook improviser, noise player. By dealing with a large number of meaningless and fragmentary sounds in a non-linear time approach, the themes of "time" and "existence" are explored especially in various environmental contexts. In addition to solo projects, he is also a member of the psychedelic noise band Vagus Nerve and the free improvised duo Mind Fiber.
Globe Discount Center(地球打折中心)
Rhythmic noise and industrial pulse made with junk electronics, tape players, mics, mini TVs. Stuff breaks, cables lead nowhere or don't get plugged in. The performer is confused; sound, image, everything is ephemeral.
