This shared office is located in Tokyo, Japan, on the fourth floor of a multi-tenant building, facing the green area of Akasaka Palace. Its unique geographical location provides a pleasant natural landscape for the office space. The lush green vegetation outside the window brings a fresh atmosphere to the interior, and also provides a relaxing visual view for office workers after busy work.
The building plan is a slightly distorted isosceles right triangle, with the acute angles used for stairs and balconies, resulting in irregular shapes of the remaining rooms, which brings certain difficulties to space planning. However, the designer cleverly utilized this feature and achieved the coexistence of multiple functions through reasonable layout, maximizing the use of limited space.
There was originally a reinforced concrete (RC) beam on the ceiling, which visually divided the room into two areas: the window and the entrance. Later, a false beam was added orthogonally to it, thus defining four loosely divided areas. This division method not only maintains the openness of the space, but also distinguishes different functional areas to a certain extent.
A 3-meter-long square tabletop is placed under the false beam, which becomes the key element of space sharing. When users use this large table, the two sides are far enough apart to share the space while maintaining a comfortable personal distance, meeting the needs of multiple people working at the same time.
The intersection of the four beams is slightly offset from the center of the tabletop, so the designer connected the two points with a fake column. This column creates a new partition on the tabletop, while giving the space a centripetal feature, giving the space a certain degree of integrity in its dispersion. The role of the column is quite ambiguous. To those who do not understand the design intention, it may look like a real structure, but because of its strange tilt angle and the unusual beams connected to it, it reveals its "fake" nature. Its existence is more to trigger people's thinking about the relationship between space and function, rather than simply providing practical functions.
The only physical division in the space is the uneven mirrored stainless steel surface. This distorted mirror reflects the horizontal windows, creating an illusion of a continuous green panorama, making the interior space seem to merge with the outdoor natural landscape, greatly expanding the visual sense of space.
At the same time, the mirrors also reflect the fake columns and beams, creating distorted false images. The columns distorted by the mirrors may appear more vertical than they actually are. This interlaced visual effect of reality and illusion makes people wonder whether the "fake within the fake" presented by these false images also constitutes a unique sense of reality to some extent, adding a mysterious and artistic atmosphere to the entire space.
