Do you have a Halloween tradition? Maybe you carve faces on pumpkins. Or watch scary movies with your family.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Halloween customs started in Europe. They go back about 2,000 years. The holiday was a harvest celebration. Fall is harvest time. That is when farmers gather the crops they have grown. Also in the fall, ghosts were thought to appear. People dressed in costumes to scare them away.

📌1. go back回溯,追溯

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Early settlers brought Halloween to North America. They carved faces in root vegetables to scare off ghosts. And they played tricks on one another.

The loud noise scared off the raccoons.

📌4. play tricks

HALLOWEEN

Halloween is derived from "All Hallows' Eve," which means "the evening before All Saints' Day." This day, October 31st, is known as Halloween, followed by November 1st, which is All Saints' Day, commemorating all saints.

Carving Jack-o'-lanterns is a popular tradition during Halloween. This custom originated in Ireland, where people initially carved turnips or potatoes. However, when European immigrants came to North America, they discovered that pumpkins were easier to carve, making the pumpkin lantern the norm.

On Halloween, children dress up in various costumes, transforming into ghosts, superheroes, or their favorite characters. This tradition traces back to the beliefs of ancient Celts, who thought that on Halloween night, spirits would return to the earthly realm. To avoid being recognized by these spirits, people would wear masks or costumes to“disguise” themselves.

Halloween is the second-largest candy-consuming holiday in the United States, just after Christmas. Each year, candy consumption during Halloween is expected to exceed $2 billion, with chocolate and gummy candies being particularly popular among kids.

Black cats are often seen as symbols of Halloween, and many believe they are associated with witches, considering them as their pets or incarnations. This superstition dates back to the Middle Ages.
