Shanghai, a historically significant city that has been the setting of countless stories and events, is now presenting its century-long evolution in the form of images. The exhibition 'Shanghai: Capital of Photography 1910s-2020s' has been launched by the Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum and undoubtedly provides an excellent opportunity to glimpse Shanghai's history and culture.
This impressive exhibition brings together a total of 268 works by 35 photographers and artists who have lived for long long periods in Shanghai, as well as more than 80 other related documents and exhibits.
These works span a century, starting from the works of photographers and artists such as Ding Song, Lang Jingshan, Tao Lengyue, Jin Shisheng who were active in Shanghai in the early 20th century, to the wonderful presentation of contemporary photographers, fully demonstrating the abiding relationship between 'Shanghai' and 'photography'.
Curator Professor Gu Zheng said, 'Photography and Shanghai complement each other perfectly.' Indeed, the introduction of photography almost coincided with the opening of Shanghai, and photography has recorded the rise and development of Shanghai over the decades.
Shanghai, a city full of changes, has also provided endless inspiration for photography. The exhibition is organized around a linear structure and is divided into four sections: 'Pioneers of Light and Shadow', 'Documentary Perspective', 'Diverse Expressions', and 'Special Presentations'. Through these sections, it takes the audience on a journey through Shanghai's history, which has been observed and presented over the past century.
In the 'Pioneers of Light and Shadow' section, viewers can appreciate the essence of modernist photography practices in China from the 1910s to the 1940s. These photographers and artists have laid a solid foundation for the development of Chinese photography through experimentation and exploration.
Among them, Lu Yuanmin's 'Suzhou River' series and Zhang Chunhai's 'Huangpu River' series form a unique visual contrast in the 'River to River' unit, which makes people sigh at the important role of these two mother rivers in the growth process of Shanghai.
The 'Special Presentation' section highlights Shanghai's important role in the industrial, economic and trade arena through a series of physical evidence, the display of 'Seagull' domestic cameras and Shanghai light industrial products, as well as the restoration of historical scenes from the 1956 'Shanghai Export Commodities and Foreign Commodities Exhibition'.
These historical representations in the form of objects, documents, and display cabinets create an immersive visual space for the audience, making them feel as if they are traveling through time and space and rediscovering Shanghai's historical status.
In the 'Street Theater' segment, photographer Guo Bo captured the scene of the Shikumen alley with his lens, vividly presenting the rapid changes in Shanghai's urban landscape and the vicissitudes of its citizens' lives since the reform and opening up.
Hou Jianhua's 'Subway' series was displayed in the 'Memory Album' section, with a special re-enactment of the Shanghai Metro People's Square Station, which cleverly echoed the location of the museum, making the audience feel as if they were in a real subway environment.
The 'Watching Experiments' unit subverts the traditional way of watching, with the artist Liao Yijun's work directing the camera lens towards the audience, transforming the viewer from a gazer to a gazed-upon.
The 'Virtual Scenes' section uses velvet curtains and mirrors to create a dramatic atmosphere, showcasing the artists' use of photography as a medium to construct virtual scenes, adding dramatic tension and infinite imagination to the exhibition.
Through this exhibition, we can witness the efforts and fruitful achievements of several generations in depicting Shanghai through photography.
They have gazed at Shanghai through ever-evolving photographic methods, and have been inspired by the constantly changing city, continuously creating highly urban images that merge into the mainstream of urban culture and become an important part of Shanghai's urban culture. Perhaps it is in this sense that Shanghai can be called the 'City of Photography'.
