ASTRA ART
ASTRA ART
At ART021 ASTRA ART has created four carefully curated exhibitions by artists from different generations. They include the vibrant life force and energy flow depicted with rhythmic and melodic strokes by the Czech artist Zdenek Konvalina, who is a member of the post-70s generation; the new perspectives based on traditional realistic painting by the post-80s artist Tong Ziyun over the past decade; As well as the post-90s artists Wang Qiqi and Lou Ye. The former challenges traditional perceptions of life and existence through bizarre bodily themes, while the latter uses traditional Chinese painting materials, with silk as the primary medium, and employs the meticulous gongbi painting technique to explore non-realistic depictions of living forms. Lou Ye's works transcend simple imitation of natural imagery and deviate from the conventional forms of traditional Chinese painting.
Although their styles vary on the canvas, they share commonalities and interconnections in their expressions of inner exploration and self-questioning.
Tong Ziyun
Tong Ziyun was born in 1987 in Henan. He obtained his undergraduate and master's degrees from the Oil Painting Department of the China Academy of Art and obtained his doctoral degree from the Chinese National Academy of Arts in 2024.
From an artistic perspective he regards realism as a unique method of distinguishing and depicting the world. Through delicate brushstrokes and profound insights, he explores the complex relationship between time and space, transcends the replication of reality, and offers his personal reflections on the challenging subject of ‘identity’. He combines rational and quiet aesthetic painting with emotional and illogical painting to form a unique expression.
Through extensive education and experience he is well-versed in traditional painting techniques, but is not bound by them. Instead, by endowing things with new life and energy, he directs the audience's gaze towards a broader experience of time and space. His works not only reveal superb skills, but also subtle explorations of the spiritual dilemma of modern people, triggering people's thinking on many issues such as history and modernity, form and the individual and society.
Tong Ziyun excels at drawing inspiration from daily life, transforming seemingly ordinary objects and scenes into subjects of artistic expression. His creative approach is not limited to direct depictions of reality, but rather focuses on incorporating his own emotions, thoughts, and concepts into his works. Through art, he attempts to reveal the dreams and emptiness within modern people's hearts, as well as the complex relationships between humans and objects, and humans and the world.

In 2010, Tong Ziyun graduated from the Oil Painting Department of China Academy of Art with a Bachelor's degree and continued his studies there for a Master's degree.
During the summer vacation of his senior year, he created a series of works, and won the gold medal in the exhibition of the China Artists Association with one of them, which was also the starting point of his career.
This marked the beginning of his career. These works not only laid the foundation for Tong Ziyun's future direction in choosing painting themes but also established his unique painting texture and delicate expression of everyday objects.

The following year, he was invited to join the research group at the China Oil Painting Academy, where he was exposed to new painting techniques and ways of thinking. He studied under several artists, deepening his exploration of the deeper meanings of his subjects.
During his undergraduate studies, Tong Ziyun primarily focused on addressing issues related to composition, form, color, and technique. However, by the time he was at the China Oil Painting Academy, he had already mastered the fundamentals of painting and was even capable of completing an entire painting by focusing on its individual parts.
This technical maturity, paradoxically, left him feeling a sense of emptiness. Under the guidance of his teachers, Tong Ziyun began to read and think from different perspectives, understanding the origins and development of painting concepts and incorporating these ideas into his creations, thereby opening up more diversified ways of thinking.

As a result, he began to comprehend the significance of time in life, and in 2012, he created "Daily Life: Seven Months Pregnant " Starting from 2013, he embarked on the "Observing Objects" series, depicting surrounding objects, still lifes, and waste materials, using ordinary items to express his views and emotions about the world.

The works of Tong Ziyun encompass both grand scenes and delicate paintings, permeated with classical sentiments yet containing destructive elements towards the classics, presenting an anti-classical effect and conveying complex emotions and thoughts.
In recent years, he has continued to create still lifes with traditional themes, but has incorporated imaginary and abstract elements, using classical painting techniques to create a sharp contrast and demonstrate a unique style in contemporary painting.

Wang Qiqi
Wang Qiqi was born in Zhejiang, China in 1996. She lives and works in Hangzhou. She studied painting at the China Academy of Art (Hangzhou), graduating in 2018 and obtaining an MFA in 2021. Wang Qiqi is now completing her doctorate of Fine Art at Shanghai University (Shanghai).
Wang Qiqi's paintings use grotesque bodies as clues to question life and existence. In many of his paintings the body opens a window of disorder in an abnormal state of combination, deformation, and not yet closed, and becomes a creature wandering on the border.
The work she produces can be seen as constantly attempting to transcend its limits, and seeks the vitality of life in the face of irrationality in the folds and cracks of the world. Wang Qiqi’s work is held in the following collections: Art Museum of the Nanjing University of Arts (AMUNA) , Nanjing; Art Museum of China Academy of Art, Hangzhou.
The audience will notice that in a number of works he chooses to obscure the faces of the figures and focuses on the depiction of the body. This choice aims to return to the materiality of the body itself, emphasizing the body as an independent language and emotional expression.
She believes that the body itself possesses its own language and emotions, capable of conveying the artist's thoughts and feelings as an independent entity. Meanwhile, by obscuring the faces, she further confronts the idealized order and the construct of the perfect human, thereby achieving a disenchantment of the real world.

Zdenek has incorporated many different concepts and ideas into his work, and these elements are closely related to the movement. Whether it is a physical rhythm, an awareness activity, or a metaphorical movement, he cleverly combines these ideas in a collage of images.
The long-term experience as a ballet dancer has profoundly influenced Zdenek's artistic creation. Ballet dancer and artist are like two sides of the same coin for Konvalina, ultimately balanced and presented in his artistic creations.
In Zdenek's graphic paintings, he integrates his past ballet experience with abstract expressionist painting, emphasizing the process itself. Besides relying on the immediate feedback from his body and mind, he pursues the practice of concepts, ideas, forms, memories, and prompts in his subconscious. He also focuses on exploring the proportional relationship between matter and spirit, demonstrating the astonishing interaction between the physical world and the digital world.
Lou Ye
Born in 1993 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Lou Ye holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from the School of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy at the China Academy of Art. She currently lives and works in Hangzhou.

Lou Ye's "Infinite" series is not just a simple imitation of natural images, but also differs from the typified presentation in traditional Chinese painting. This series of works express the artist's exploration of the infinite growth of things in the chaos of the universe, the cycle of consumption and rebirth, and the endless cycle of exploration from different perspectives.

Representing a unique reflection of her own psychological experience and thought concepts on silk, the shape of this bamboo is similar to Ouroboros, symbolizing the concept of the "self-devourer" representing the cycle of life and death, exploring the perpetual cycle of rebirth. It also reflects the meaning of "folds" in Deleuze, where folding is a metaphor for the complex essence of reality and existence, emphasizing the continuity and interconnected nature of all things.
