DIalogues with Turner:Evoking the Sublime

Art enthusiasts are surely familiar with J.M.W. Turner, the British national treasure and master of Romantic painting from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. He is renowned for his keen ability to capture the nuances of light and shadow, as well as his heartfelt depictions of seascapes.

Turner's works are often imbued with a sense of poetry and dreamlike quality, especially his seascapes at sunset and in morning mist, which reveal both the grandeur and delicacy of nature’s beauty. His influence on later artists has been profound. Turner's brushwork is free and expressive, and his use of color is bold and full of emotion, with each piece reflecting a deep understanding of both nature and human sentiment.

In the "Light: Works from Tate's Collection" exhibition, over a dozen masterpieces by Turner captivated countless art lovers, leaving a lasting impression of this British national treasure. Now, as the institution with the largest collection of Turner's works, the Tate Museum brings his art once again to the Museum of Art Pudong, showcasing around 80 of his original masterpieces.

These works span key stages of the artist's career, with each piece representing the pinnacle of his artistic exploration and emotional expression. From delicate brushstrokes to grand, majestic compositions, Turner, with his unique perspective and profound emotions, leads us through a dreamlike world of light and shadow, allowing us to experience the timeless resonance of the "sublime" that transcends eras.

As the first stop in Asia for the "DIalogues with Turner:Evoking the Sublime" exhibition, the Museum of Art Pudong has carefully curated eight thematic sections that comprehensively review Turner’s artistic career.
The exhibition begins with Turner’s early British landscapes, gradually delving into his masterpieces that explore light, shadow, and atmosphere, and extending to his landscape creations inspired by travels to places like Switzerland and Venice. It showcases how Turner pursued and expressed the 18th-century aesthetic concept of the "sublime" in his work.

A special highlight of the exhibition is a dedicated space screening an exclusive Turner documentary produced by the Tate Museum specifically for the Museum of Art Pudong. This allows viewers to feel as though they are traveling through time, walking alongside Turner on his artistic journey.

Additionally, the exhibition ingeniously incorporates works by over ten contemporary artists, who engage in dialogue with Turner's pieces from fresh perspectives, exploring the limitless possibilities of light, shadow, and atmosphere, and giving new 21st-century interpretations to the concept of the "sublime." This exhibition is not only a visual feast but also a profound experience, guiding audiences to deeply explore the mysteries and allure of art.

El Anatsui:After The Red Moon

Another major exhibition at the Pudong Art Museum is set to open grandly on September 30, 2024: *El Anatsui: After the Red Moon*. This exhibition invites audiences on an extraordinary journey that transcends the boundaries of creativity and environmentalism.

In the design of this exhibition, El Anatsui's works reinterpret the core space of the Museum of Art Pudong —the central exhibition hall—while, for the first time, creatively incorporating the entrance lobby into the exhibition layout. These two spaces interact and complement each other, weaving together an unprecedented artistic landscape.
At the exhibition, a colossal installation takes center stage, composed of tens of thousands of recycled bottle caps and metal fragments. Through the artist's hands, these materials are given new life and transformed into a powerful work of art.

Each material is carefully selected, hand-pressed, and molded, then intricately woven together with fine copper wire to create an art form that is both powerful and delicate, full of vitality. The immense scale and ingenious design of the piece will undoubtedly offer audiences a visually stunning and soul-stirring experience.
In *El Anatsui: After the Red Moon*, visitors will not only witness the boundless creativity of art but also reflect on the profound connections between humanity and nature, the past and the future.

'El Anatsui: After the Red Moon' is undoubtedly the most spectacular installation art exhibition ever hosted by the Museum of Art Pudong since its opening. The exhibition is meticulously divided into three acts: 'Waves', 'World', and 'Wall'. Each act unfolds like a grand narrative, vividly portraying the sweeping scope of human history while subtly awakening the primal and powerful forces of nature.

This dramatic and exciting exhibition debuted in London in 2023, and its opening at the Museum of Art Pudong marks the beginning of its global tour. As the first international stop after the premiere, this exhibition holds great significance.
