《玉出申江——潘玉良的艺术之旅》特展

在上海世博会博物馆1号临展厅开展。


The World Expo Museum, in collaboration with the Anhui Museum, presents the special exhibition "From Shanghai To Paris:The Artistic Journey of Pan Yulin", which has opened in the No. 1 Temporary Exhibition Hall of the Shanghai World Expo Museum.

潘玉良是中国著名女画家、雕塑家。她与徐悲鸿、林风眠同期的留洋艺术家,是中国留法艺术家代表人物。她将接受的西方美术教育、学习现代派艺术融入到中国绘画艺术,是二十世纪早期融会中西画风的艺术先驱。


She travelled and worked oversees along with several other famous Chinese artists including Xu Beijing and Lin Fengmian, and is a representative figure of Chinese artists who studied in France.

 

She successfully integrated Western art education and the styles of art she came across while traveling into Chinese-style painting, becoming a pioneer in the early 20th century for blending Chinese and Western painting styles.

她的油画借鉴了现实主义、印象主义及野兽派等众多西方绘画流派的风格和韵味,以印象派的外光技法为基础,融入中国传统的线描手法,既丰富了西画的表现手法,又将中国艺术的意境、韵律、诗意蕴藏其中。构图大胆而夸张,画面奔放而深沉,色彩绚丽而宁静,有着强烈的动感。


她的彩墨画充分发挥西画背景烘染和后印象派的点彩手法,同时又吸收了中国民间艺术的质朴、浑厚、沉静的气韵,成功地将中国的笔墨精神和西画的实体质感巧妙地融合在一起,呈现出既秀美灵逸又坚实饱满的独特的审美情趣。


Her oil paintings draw on the styles and flavors of many Western painting schools, such as realism, impressionism, and fauvism. Based on the outdoor lighting techniques of impressionism, she integrated the traditional Chinese line drawing techniques, enriching the expressive methods of Western painting while also embedding the artistic conception, rhythm, and poetry of Chinese art. Her compositions are bold and exaggerated, with unrestrained yet profound images, and her colors are brilliant yet serene, possessing a strong sense of movement.

 

Her colored ink paintings fully utilize the background shading of Western paintings and the pointillism technique of post-impressionism, while also absorbing the simplicity, richness, and tranquility of Chinese folk art. She successfully merged the spirit of Chinese brushwork with the material texture of Western paintings, presenting a unique aesthetic taste that is both graceful and substantial.



她曾两次排除困难远渡重洋,在巴黎从事艺术活动达50多个春秋,一生留下4000多件艺术作品,为中国现代美术的发展以及中法艺术的传播交流做出了重要贡献。


She overcame difficulties twice to cross the ocean and engaged in artistic activities in Paris for more than 50 years, leaving behind more than 4,000 pieces of art, making significant contributions to the development of modern Chinese art and the dissemination and exchange of Sino-French art.




展览大观

Exhibition Introduction



本次展览精选近百件美术作品和文献展品,以独特的上海视角为叙事线索,深入探索潘玉良这位艺术巨匠在上海与巴黎这两座艺术之都留下的深刻足迹。


展览分为“启航:沪上晨曦”“远航:绽放巴黎”“归航:墨彩和鸣”三个单元,全面展现潘玉良女士融会中西的画作风格和丰富多彩的艺术生涯。

 

This exhibition carefully selects nearly a hundred pieces of art and documentary exhibits, using a unique Shanghai perspective as the narrative thread, to deeply explore the profound footprints left by the artistic master Pan Yulin in Shanghai and Paris, the two cities of art.

 

The exhibition is divided into three sections: "Setting Sail: Morning Glow in Shanghai," "Voyaging: Blooming in Paris," and "Returning: Harmony of Ink and Color," fully displaying the style of Pan Yulin's paintings that blend Chinese and Western elements and her rich and colorful artistic career.





第一单元 

启航:沪上晨曦

UNIT ONE Setting Sail: Morning Glow in Shanghai


潘玉良的艺术之旅始于上海,她人生中的重要节点——艺术启蒙、赴欧留学、回国任教、再度旅法——皆与这座城市密切相关。


1920年9月,在西学东渐的影响之下上海美专开创了男女同校的历史,潘玉良与其他11位女生一起考入上海美术学校(上海美专前身)西洋画科,作为插班生被编入第十一届西洋画正科班。1928年9月,她归国后出任上海美专西画系主任,成为中国第一位担任西画系掌门人的女性。


Pan Yulin's artistic journey began in Shanghai, where key moments in her life—artistic enlightenment, studying in Europe, returning to teach, and traveling to France again—are closely linked to this city.


In September 1920, under the influence of Western learning spreading to the East, the Private Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts initiated a historic co-educational system. Pan Yulin, along with 11 other female students, was admitted to the Western Painting Department of the Private Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts as a transfer student, joining the 11th class of Western Painting. 


In September 1928, upon her return to China, she became the head of the Western Painting Department of the Private Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, becoming the first woman to hold such a position in the Western Painting Department.

在这里,潘玉良的艺术思想与自我意识同步生长,她不仅吸收了西方的艺术理念,更在女性形象的表现上开创了新的领域。作为当时画坛中为数不多的女性艺术家,潘玉良与刘海粟、徐悲鸿等杰出艺术家携手努力,共同推动了艺术革新的浪潮,为上海乃至整个中国美术界的发展做出了不可磨灭的贡献。


Pan Yulin's artistic ideas and self-awareness grew in tandem. She not only absorbed Western artistic concepts but also pioneered new realms in the portrayal of female figures. As one of the few female artists in the art circle at that time, Pan Yulin worked hand in hand with outstanding artists such as Liu Haisu and Xu Beihong, jointly promoting the wave of artistic innovation and making an indelible contribution to the development of the Shanghai and the entire Chinese art world.

因此世博会博物馆通过与上海多家美术机构的紧密联动,借展了一系列珍贵的作品,展现了潘玉良与同时代的艺术家们——刘海粟、王济远、朱屺瞻等人的深厚友谊和艺术交流。最终完成了对那个时代艺术家群像的一次生动展现。


Therefore, the World Expo Museum, through close collaboration with several art institutions in Shanghai, has borrowed a series of precious works, showcasing the profound friendship and artistic exchanges between Pan Yulin and her contemporaries—Liu Haisu, Wang Jiyuan, Zhu Qizhan, and others. Ultimately, it has completed a vivid portrayal of the artists of that era.

第二单元

远航:绽放巴黎

UNIT TWO Voyage: Blooming in Paris


1937年底,潘玉良带着对艺术的无限憧憬再次远航,从上海出发辗转抵达巴黎。在这座世界艺术之都,潘玉良尽情绽放才华,在各类权威沙龙展览中斩获荣誉。积极参与了各种艺术活动,频繁参加巴黎的沙龙展,并于1945年出任留法中国艺术学会会长(1945年,中国赢得抗日战争的胜利)她辗转于英、美、法、意、德、日等国之间举办个展和群展40多次,获得各种奖励20多项。

 

At the end of 1937, Pan Yulin set sail again with boundless aspirations for art, departing from Shanghai and eventually arriving in Paris. In this world capital of art, Pan Yulin fully blossomed her talents, winning honors in various authoritative salon exhibitions. 


She actively participated in a variety of artistic activities, frequently attended Parisian salons, and in 1945 became the president of the Chinese Art Society in France (coinciding with China's victory in the Anti-Japanese War). She traveled between the UK, the US, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and other countries, holding over 40 solo and group exhibitions and receiving more than 20 awards.

此组人物小像作品是为《论画的友人》所作的色彩小稿。《论画的友人》是一幅大型油画作品,创作于1943年,画作记录了潘玉良在巴黎时与女性好友分享艺术的美好时光。这幅画常年陈列于潘玉良巴黎工作室的墙面,可见她对这件作品的偏爱。


This set of small portraits was created as a color sketch for "Friends Discussing Painting." "Friends Discussing Painting" is a large oil painting, produced in 1943, which captures the wonderful moments when Pan Yulin shared art with her female friends in Paris. The painting has been displayed on the wall of Pan Yulin's Paris studio for many years, reflecting her fondness for this work.



在这段法国岁月中,潘玉良的艺术创作达到了新的高度,不仅在技法上展现了中西艺术的完美融合,更在主题上传递了女性独立与自我实现的精神追求。她笔下的女性形象不再局限于温柔、顺从的传统角色,而是独立、自信的现代女性面貌,呈现出与男性艺术家截然不同的视角和表达。当代研究者认为,潘玉良很难完全归属于某一流派她的画作兼具写实与表现。她以人体画为主要样式,结合切身感受创作出来的自画像,是其人格与艺格的双重体现。


During her time in France, Pan Yulin's artistic creation reached new heights, not only demonstrating a perfect fusion of Chinese and Western art techniques but also conveying the spirit of women's independence and the pursuit of self-fulfillment in her themes. 


The female figures in her paintings were no longer confined to the traditional roles of gentleness and obedience but presented as independent and confident modern women, offering a perspective and expression distinctly different from male artists. Contemporary researchers believe that Pan Yulin cannot be fully categorized into any one school; her paintings combine realism and expressionism. She mainly focused on figure painting, and her self-portraits, created with personal experiences, are a dual reflection of her personality and artistic style.

本次特展也是近年来潘玉良自画像最为集中的一次展示,将共展出自画像6幅原作、1件文献。其中,包含最美的自画像作品《自画像》(1940),最早的自画像作品(《潘玉良油画集》封面),观众可近距离观赏到潘玉良的珍贵自画像共7件。


This special exhibition is also the most concentrated display of Pan Yulin's self-portraits in recent years, showcasing a total of 6 original self-portraits and 1 document. Among them, it includes the most beautiful self-portrait work "Self-Portrait" (1940), the earliest self-portrait work (cover of "Pan Yulin Oil Painting Collection"), allowing visitors to closely appreciate a total of 7 precious self-portraits by Pan Yulin.





第三单元

归航:墨彩和鸣

UNIT THREE Return Voyage: Harmony of Ink and Color


潘玉良一生坚守“合中西于一冶”的艺术理想,艺术创作涵盖多种类型,其中白描、油画、彩墨画最能体现其艺术特色。漂泊异乡四十载,潘玉良始终未能实现回国之愿,她把对故土的思念融入艺术,用线条与笔触、油彩与墨色表达对中国文化本能的追寻,在画布方寸之间一次次实现心灵的归航,创作出富有强烈的民族特色和现代气息的珍贵作品。


Throughout her life, Pan Yulin adhered to the artistic ideal of "Integration of Chinese and Western cultures",  with her creative works encompassing a variety of types, among which line drawing, oil painting, and colored ink painting best reflect her artistic characteristics. 


After forty years of wandering in foreign lands, Pan Yulin was never able to fulfill her wish to return to her homeland. She infused her longing for her homeland into her art, using lines and brushstrokes, oil colors and ink to express an instinctive pursuit of Chinese culture. Within the confines of the canvas, she repeatedly achieved a spiritual return voyage, creating precious works rich in strong national characteristics and a modern atmosphere.



在精心策划的展览空间中,每一幅作品都仿佛是一个窗口,透过它们,观众得以窥见潘玉良在不同生命阶段的艺术追求与心灵轨迹,深刻体会到她作为女性艺术家在时代洪流中的坚韧与成长。


展览期间还将举办相关活动及讲座,深入介绍潘玉良的人生与艺术,让观众在新的历史时期重新认识这位杰出的中国画家。


In the carefully planned exhibition space, each work is like a window through which the audience can glimpse Pan Yulin's artistic pursuit and spiritual trajectory in different stages of life, and deeply appreciate her tenacity and growth as a female artist in the torrent of the times.


During the exhibition, related activities and lectures will also be held to provide an in-depth introduction to Pan Yulin's life and art, allowing the audience to re-recognize this outstanding Chinese painter in a new historical period.
