At the end of August as we again approach the changing of the seasons, the Guan Shanyue Museum in Shenzhen is embracing the rich hues of autumn. On August 28th, 2024 the museum unveiled their latest fascinating offering to the general public, entitled “Eastern Charm - My Seasons”. Through delicate brushstrokes capturing the essence of the changing seasons, Eastern aesthetics flow gracefully through every piece of this collection, showcasing a unique grace and rhythm.
The changing weather of the season not only brings us welcome coolness but also a yearning for the beauty of the moment. In this thought-provoking exhibition we encounter not only fine art but a spiritual truth and and resonance which wonderfully represents the beauty of the East.
This 'Eastern Charm—My Seasons' art exhibition is not only a grand celebration of the 17th anniversary of the China Cultural Heritage Foundation but also marks a new milestone in deepening cultural dialogue and promoting mutual learning between civilizations in the glorious 60-year history of diplomatic relations between China and France. It is not only a reflection and tribute to past achievements but also an important step towards the future, as we work together to advance cultural and artistic exchanges and integration between China, France, and the world.
The undisputed highlight of this exhibition is a collection of ten meticulously crafted gongbi figure paintings by the renowned artist and founding president of the China Cultural Heritage Foundation, Madam Geng Ying. This series, with the theme 'My Seasons,' intricately weaves Madam Geng's deep remembrance of her father, Geng Biao, on the 115th anniversary of his birth.
Through her brush as the vessel and colors as the sails, she guides viewers across the river of time, allowing them to experience the magnificent life journey and enduring spirit of the older generation of revolutionaries.
Chinese gongbi painting has a long and rich history, maturing from the Warring States period to the Song Dynasty. Gongbi figure painting, in particular, has been exceptionally brilliant. The Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties saw masters like Gu Kaizhi emerge, while Yan Liben's 'Portraits of Emperors of Successive Dynasties' from the Tang Dynasty stands out as a masterful work.
In the Song Dynasty, Li Gonglin's delicate line drawings were remarkable, and in the Ming Dynasty, Qiu Ying blended ancient traditions with innovation. In modern times, the fusion of Chinese and Western techniques has made gongbi figure painting both precise in form and rich in traditional charm.
The ten monumental gongbi figure paintings recently created by Madam Geng Ying and exhibited this time, such as 'Wenji Returns to Han,' 'Chang'e Flying to the Moon,' 'Lady Meng'Jiang,' 'Madame Butterfly,' inherit the essence of tradition while blending historical narratives with contemporary concerns.
Unlike traditional literati paintings of landscapes, flowers, and birds, these works emphasize narrative content and highlight the functions of "educating and inspiring morals." Through meticulous techniques, they integrate traditional decorative elements with a sense of flatness, refining and exaggerating the imagery, and using unique expressive methods to achieve a perfect unity of form and spirit.
Each painting is a heartfelt exploration and modern interpretation of the profound meaning of Eastern aesthetics by Madam Geng Ying. They are not just symphonies of color and dances of lines but also delicate expressions of emotion and philosophical thought.
The figures in the paintings are so lifelike that they seem to transcend time, silently telling moving stories of faith, courage, and devotion. As viewers stand before them, it feels as though they are immersed in a flowing scroll of history, breathing alongside the heroes of the past and sharing in their memories.
To bridge the gap between art and the public, this exhibition thoughtfully features a public interaction area, creating a fully immersive art experience. Here, visitors can witness Madam Geng Ying’s creative moments up close as never before, feeling the burst of inspiration and the masterful techniques of a distinguished artist. Additionally, they have the opportunity to pick up a brush themselves, freely exploring the world of traditional painting, and experiencing the joy of creation and the emotional connection that comes from the heart.
Moreover, the exhibition has thoughtfully curated a series of creative and culturally rich merchandise. These products not only embody the unique aesthetic concept of the exhibition but also, with their distinctive design and practicality, allow the beauty of art to transcend the boundaries of the gallery, permeating the daily lives of every visitor. They become a unique way for individuals to express their personality and convey their emotions.
For those interested, a visit to the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen is highly recommended to experience the unique charm and depth presented by artist Madam Geng Ying. It might be more than just a visual art exhibition; it could also be a source of comfort for the soul and a brilliant fusion of culture and philosophy.
