Para 1: Mr. B invited Xiaowen and his mom to his office and told them the good news.
Despite having been briefed about such a miraculous possibility beforehand, Xiaowen's mother struggled to grasp it fully until she met Mr. B and his enthusiastic team. Their genuine smiles and unwavering assurance that their charity would cover Xiaowen's surgery left her in stunned silence. Xiaowen, sensing his mother’s disbelief through her heavy sighs, felt a whirlwind of emotions. On one hand, he didn't want to burden others with his struggles; on the other hand, this opportunity was a dream come true, a chance to reclaim the sounds he'd been missing all his life. Mr. B, keenly aware of Xiaowen's internal conflict, approached him with warmth, encouraging his assistant to share that bringing joy to others was the very purpose of their efforts, assuring them there was no pressure. Overwhelmed by the kindness, Xiaowen's mother turned to the window, silent tears tracing down her cheeks—tears of hope, relief, and profound gratitude. Just a week later, with courage bubbling inside him, Xiaowen was wheeled into the operating room, a broad smile lighting his face.
Para 2: One month later, Xiaowen and his mom went to the hospital to try out the signal-receiving device.
Having spent the past weeks adjusting to the implant nestled behind his ear, he stepped into the doctor’s office with a mix of eagerness and anxiety. The doctor carefully checked his condition, connecting various sensors to the computer, his demeanor calm yet focused. "Before I turn it on, I must warn you about some discomfort as your brain builds new neural pathways," he cautioned. With his heart racing, Xiaowen gave a reassuring thumbs up, a signal of his determination. Every question posed by the doctor met with his resolute approval, yet nothing could prepare him for the moment of transformation. “Now, I’m going to turn it all on. You’ll hear my voice,” the doctor announced. At that instant, it felt like a new universe erupted within him. Years of struggle, longing, and suppressed emotions cascaded into an overwhelming surge of relief and undeniable joy. He leaned back, instinctively covering his face with his hands as tears streamed down—tears that began as muffled cries but soon erupted with pure unfiltered happiness. His mother rushed to embrace him, her own tears flowing freely, an effusion of years spent worrying as she finally witnessed the incredible moment her son could hear her calling. For both of them, the world had just expanded, engulfing them in a symphony of sound, and Xiaowen was finally, unequivocally, "sound."
