Donald Trump’s return to the White House could fuel a blockbuster 2025 on Wall Street, but concerns linger over inflationary policies and global strife, big US banks said as they unveiled bumper quarterly earnings.

Top executives from several of Wall Street’s biggest banks on Wednesday offered upbeat outlooks for this year, particularly for their investment banking businesses, which have surged in revenues in recent months.

The cautiously optimistic sentiment highlights how many US executives are hoping the president-elect’s pledges to boost growth and slash regulations will be a boon to their businesses even as they worry about his sometimes erratic policymaking.

Israel and Hamas have agreed a ceasefire to halt the 15-month war in Gaza and free the remaining hostages, mediators said, raising hopes of an end to a devastating conflict that has shaken the Middle East and the world beyond.

The agreement offers hope of a halt — and potentially an end — to a brutal war that has become the deadliest chapter in the decades-long history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, leaving Gaza in ruins, consuming Israeli society, and pushing the Middle East to the brink of a full-blown war.

Biden’s top Middle East adviser Brett McGurk was joined in the last days of negotiating by Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff. A senior Biden administration official called it “a historic and crucial partnership” to finalise the arrangements.

Thousands of buildings and residences have been razed to the ground from mansions in Pacific Palisades to less affluent neighbourhoods in Altadena. Gavin Newsom, the California governor, suggested at the weekend that the fires will amount to America’s costliest natural disaster ever. AccuWeather, a private weather forecaster, estimates the economic hit at over $250bn.

In recent years, the golden state has become increasingly vulnerable to wildfires. Last year, Climate Central, a non-profit group, found that higher temperatures had increased the number of hot, dry and windy weather days across California. But neither the state’s heavily-regulated insurance sector nor its climate preparedness strategies have kept pace with the risks.

The calamity in California is another big reminder of the need for political leaders, public authorities and companies to accelerate climate adaptation. If the most prosperous state in the world’s richest economy can be caught so underprepared, that is a lesson for all.

The move to a 10-year country partnership framework — from short-term adjustment programmes previously — is aimed at shielding the lender’s investments from crisis-hit Pakistan’s political turbulence and incentivising the government to stick to reforms announced in recent months.

The programme will focus on combating malnutrition and improving education, climate change resilience and Pakistan’s debt-laden energy sector, the statement said.

Pakistan suffered one of Asia’s worst economic crises in recent years, teetering on the brink of default in June 2023 as inflation surged above 30 per cent, foreign reserves dwindled and its debt burden absorbed government revenue.
