America’s biggest banks are set to post a jump in profits to $31bn for the final three months of 2024 as Donald Trump’s election victory sparked a jolt of trading activity on Wall Street and dealmaking activity picked up.

Earnings of the biggest six US banks by assets — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley — are forecast to have increased 16 per cent from the same quarter a year earlier, after excluding nearly $10bn in payments lenders made to the federal deposit insurance fund at the end of 2023 to cover the costs of that year’s regional bank failures, according to data from Bloomberg.

The bumper profit expectations follow a rise in market volatility in the run-up to the November 5 US election, and then a big rally in equities in the weeks that followed. Several big banks, including Citi and JPMorgan, said late last year higher trading activity had boosted their revenues.

Crude prices on Monday reached their highest level since August as Indian and Chinese refiners scrambled to find alternative supplies after tough new US sanctions targeting Russian oil revenues.

Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose as much as 1.9 per cent to $81.29 a barrel in London, beyond the $80.93 high of last October. The gains followed a 3 per cent rise on Friday following the initial announcement of the new sanctions. WTI, the US equivalent, added 2.3 per cent to $78.33.

Giovanni Staunovo, an oil analyst for UBS, said there had been reports that refineries in China — the world’s largest oil importer — and India — the third-largest — were seeking new sources of crude after the US announced sanctions on producers including Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas.

Aircraft shortages will drag on for years amid persistent delivery delays by the world’s two large plane makers, the heads of some of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies have warned.

Industry veteran Steven Udvar-Házy, executive chair of Air Lease, said neither Airbus nor Boeing had been able to meet “any of their production targets”. The delivery delays, he told the Airline Economics conference in Dublin, were cascading down through the rest of the supply chain.

Peter Barrett, chief executive of SMBC Aviation Capital, said the industry was still “in for a number of years of unpredictability around the supply chain”.

Artificial intelligence faces different regulations in Northern Ireland and Britain as a new EU law is phased in from next month, just as the UK attempts to step up its global AI ambitions.

The UK’s exit from the EU left Northern Ireland with continued access to the bloc’s market for goods and subject to some EU laws. It put a politically sensitive customs border in the Irish Sea, which will now also extend to some digital operations under the EU’s AI Act.

The latest example of post-Brexit regulatory divergence follows differences between the UK and EU over permitted levels of arsenic in baby food and the size of fonts on chemical products and comes as the UK government on Monday announced a major investment in its AI capability.
