A video circulating on social
media platforms X and Telegram purports to show an interview with a North
Korean soldier who fought in the Battle of Kursk in Russia, claiming to be the
only survivor of a small unit of 40 North Korean soldiers. Multiple sources are
sharing the video, but BulgarianMilitary.com cannot independently verify its
authenticity or the story of the alleged interviewee. Some social media accounts label
this video as propaganda, suggesting it is fabricated, while others argue it’s
genuine, claiming they can identify the North Korean dialect spoken by the
supposed survivor. In the meantime, the Korean news site n.news.naver.com has
published a report about the video in Korean.
The video features a man with
visible facial injuries lying in a hospital bed. His speech is terse and
fragmented, with English subtitles provided. According to these subtitles, a
unit of 40 North Korean soldiers was left under heavy Ukrainian artillery and
drone fire in the Kursk region. The wounded soldier states, “The Russian
military lied to us, saying we wouldn’t be attacked [if we stayed in protected
areas]… and that we would never be deployed to the front lines.”
The soldier further claims, “Yet,
the Russian army recklessly forced us into the offensive during the Battle of
Kursk. They didn’t conduct any reconnaissance before the attack and left us
without weapons to defend ourselves.” He recounts, “When Ukraine launched its
attack… they began their assault” and adds, “There were 40 of us, including my
friends Hyeok-cheol and Gyeong-hwan, and they were all killed.” The North
Korean soldier also describes, “A Russian soldier’s head was blown off by
shrapnel… I survived only by hiding beneath the bodies of my fallen comrades.”
The subtitles reveal more of the
story: “I’d heard stories of the Liberation War from my grandfather, but
nothing like this. In reality, we… our comrades were treated as fodder,
sacrificed.” The soldier continues, “The Ukrainian soldiers are well-armed with
the latest weapons and highly motivated… On the other hand, the Russian army
has suffered heavy equipment losses and is deploying soldiers like us
recklessly in the offensive.” He reflects, “This is truly the evil of this
world.”
He adds, “I saw mountains of
Russian soldiers’ bodies with my own eyes, as well as destroyed defensive
positions,” concluding, “Putin will lose this war.”
In an earlier report, Jonas
Ohman, a representative from the Lithuanian non-profit organization
Blue-Yellow, told the local media LRT on October 28, “The first visual contact
between the Ukrainian military units we support and North Korean troops
occurred in Kursk on October 25.” He added, “As far as I know, all of the North
Korean soldiers were killed except for one.”
