A Russian soldier has recounted
harrowing details of the devastation in Vovchansk, where corpses are stacked
and impede escape routes. Since May, intense combat has engulfed the city
following a sudden Russian offensive that opened a new battlefront. The war has
extended for years, leading to chaos within the Russian army, and a high amount
of costs. Vovchansk, a mere 47 miles from Kharkiv, was once a small community
of 17,000 people.
Vladimir Putin has asserted that
Russia's actions were aimed at establishing a defensive zone to shield its
border towns from Ukrainian shelling.
Despite initial advances due to
the element of surprise, Russian forces found themselves mired as the Ukrainian
military mounted a counteroffensive. The relentless struggle for Vovchansk has
left it utterly destroyed.

grim experiences in Vovchansk online, depicting a nightmarish scenario of death
and disarray within his ranks.
Injured by a sniper, he took
refuge with comrades in a cellar of a ruined building, dodging ongoing drone
strikes. Their only escape was a perilous 50-meter dash under the watchful eyes
of the Ukrainian forces.
"Fifty metres, no more say
those who managed to cross that distance in our direction," he detailed in
his blog post. "The path is blocked by debris, construction waste and
bodies. Bodies, bodies, bodies of our soldiers. They are everywhere. As far as
the eye can see, there are dead." "Some (of the injured) lie in the
basement where we are hiding, some have been there for just one day, others for
15." "Those who can't move lie there the longest. They need
evacuation, but there is none and there is no sign of it." "These 50
metres are completely controlled by Ukrainian drones and snipers. When the
drones aren't flying, they fire at us with mortars."
He adds: "There are many who
have died or been fatally wounded. They are already lying in two or three
layers, close to the wounded." "The persistent smell of death and
decaying flesh fills the basement. The guys are rotting and the medic can't
help them." "He only gives painkillers delivered by drone. Medicine
and a pack of cigarettes - that's all the help we get from those sitting just
fifty metres away."
