Many of the most pressing questions in the social and medical sciences are causal questions. Randomized studies are presented as “the gold standard” of causal inference, however, randomization alone does not help us understand who benefits the most from the treatment or intervention in question. Moreover, in many applied contexts, it is impossible to run randomized studies for crucial causal questions. Causal inference methods that leverage flexible non-parametric machine learning models have clear advantages for identifying what works for whom and estimating causal effects for observational studies where the treatment or intervention is not randomly assigned. While the advantages of these approaches have been demonstrated, they carry a hidden assumption that they are implemented correctly by practitioners. This hidden assumption is often overlooked by methodologists and little is known about how machine learning based approaches to causal inference are used by applied practitioners. In this talk, George Perrett will provide an overview of causal inference methods for randomized and observational studies, describe the benefits of flexible non-parametric methods offered by machine learning algorithms and present a new software to aid the implementation of these approaches. As part of this discussion Perrett will present new data from a recently conducted randomized experiment that highlights the importance of making causal inference methods scaffolded and accessible.

George Perrett

Professor Perrett has degrees in Psychology (University of Wisconsin-Madison), Public Health (University of Michigan) and Applied Statistics (New York University). The focus of his work is on developing software and methods that can bridge causal inference methods from the field of statistics and the work of applied researchers. He leads development of thinkCausal, a software that provides a scaffolded platform for fitting Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART) for causal inference problems, with Professor Jennifer Hill of New York University. BART methods have the potential to make fewer assumptions and have been shown to perform better in many settings than popular methods such as propensity score matching. Simultaneous to Perrett’s software development, he has worked on developing simulation methods to evaluate the effectiveness of novel applications of Bayesian Additive Regression Trees for educational research settings such as stan4bart which extends traditional BART models to multilevel contexts.

Perrett’s career began as an applied researcher running randomized controlled trials to estimate the causal effects of brief classroom writing interventions on educational disparities. He understands the needs of educational researchers and the focus of his current work is on developing tools and methodologies that fit those needs.

In addition to his methodological work, Perrett has interests in real world evidence, and how people think about causality and process statistical evidence. He has given talks at the American Causal Inference Conference and the New York City R conference.

哈巍

北京大学学士、北京大学管理学硕士、哈佛大学公共政策博士。现任北京大学教育学院副院长。主要研究方向是运用因果推断等前沿计量经济学研究方法系统评估教育政策成效,先后主持国家自然科学基金和教育部人文社会科学重点研究基地重大项目等27项科研项目,发表了70余篇中英文学术文章。曾获教育部第八届高等学校科学研究优秀成果二等奖、China Economic Review 2016年最佳论文奖等。主要社会兼职包括SSCI期刊International Journal of Education Development 副主编、SSCI期刊Education Finance and Policy编委会委员、中国高等教育学会学术发展咨询委员会委员等。

教育经济研究所

北京大学教育经济研究所成立于1999年,由原国家教委、原国家计委和财政部联合支持设立,是教育部人文社会科学重点研究基地,也是全国唯一一所从事教育经济学研究的国家重点研究机构。

教育经济研究所秉承北京大学“开放民主、兼容并包”的学术氛围和团结协作的优良传统,聚集了一批知名学者,形成了规范与实证研究相结合、定量方法与定性方法相结合的多学科综合研究特色。

研究所依托于北京大学教育学院和教育经济与管理博士点(国内该学科第一个博士点),不断推进人才培养、学术研究、政策咨询和社会服务模式创新,为我国教育学科的发展和教育改革做出了重要贡献。 

作为国家教育问题的重要研究和咨询机构,教育经济研究所以教育领域的重大现实问题和基础理论问题为研究重心,致力于探索教育经济学科前沿重大问题,始终坚持服务国家教育政策制定的重大战略需求。 

研究所现有专职研究人员20名,来自经济学、教育学、社会学、管理学、理学、工学等多种学科,思想敏锐,训练有素,具有广阔的国际视野和丰富的国际合作研究的经验。除拥有一支精干的专职研究队伍外,研究所还聘请了国内外一批知名专家学者作为兼职研究人员。 

多年来,研究所人员主持和参与了多项国家级、省部级和国际机构的重大科研项目,研究成果得到国内外学术界的高度评价, 产生了积极而广泛的社会影响。 

2000年,教育经济研究所被国内同行专家评选为教育部普通高等学校人文社会科学重点研究基地;2002年,教育经济与管理学科被国务院学位委员会组织的专家评为全国重点学科;2003年,被评为“公共管理”一级学科博士点,并取得了博士后流动站的资格;2010年,教育经济研究所被评为全国优秀人文社科重点研究基地。
