1. Melanie Malzahn, University of Vienna, Department of Linguistics, former Dean of Faculty for Philological and Cultural Studies: The Tradition of Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna
The University of Vienna is one of the oldest universities in Europe. It was founded in 1365 and is still located around the former medieval part of the city of Vienna. Today, it is the largest academic institution in Central Europe, offering the full range of academic subjects (except clinical medicine). In 2022, 84,600 students were enrolled, a third of them from countries other than Austria, and more than 500 chair professors were employed. While the old academic traditions are still cherished and are part of the official university life, the main strategic objective lies in the combination of cutting-edge research and comprehensive education. The university is also the largest training institution for Austrian primary and secondary school teachers. The University's success in research is reflected in its high level of third-party funding and in its ranking positions. In the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, the University is ranked among the 101-150 best institutions, while several subjects are even ranked in the 1-30 range, including some of the fields of philological and cultural studies. Our international networks and inter-institutional agreements are an important part of this success story. This paper gives an overview of the academic framework of Austrian universities and presents research, teaching and international networking of the Department of Philological and Cultural Studies with a focus on Musicology and Performing Arts.

2. Christoph Reuter, University of Vienna, Department of Musicology: Happy life comes with P5 - Vienna Signal Analysis Tools for audio-synced motion, expression and emotion acquisition
Since the 2010s, audio signal analysis libraries have offered new and extensive possibilities for automatic audio analysis. Using the JavaScript libraries P5 and ML5, novel online applications have been developed at our department since 2019, providing researchers and students with a fast and practical way to collect data from audio and video files. These applications offer different possibilities of audio signal analysis with focus on pitch, timbre, onset detection, formant detection, spectral features etc. as well as automatic audio-synced motion analysis (pose tracking, hand tracking), expression/emotion analysis (face tracking) or the detection of valence and arousal while listening to music. The integration of external devices is also possible with the new JavaScript libraries, such as the connection with a Muse S EEG headband including blue tooth control and data processing/visualization. During the talk, a number of hands-on examples of the freely available online applications will be presented.

3. Anja-Xiaoxing Cui, University of Vienna, Department of Musicology / Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies: The musical brain
Experience changes our brains, both in a functional and a structural manner. The goal of this lecture is to provide attendees with an overview about what we know about how music training – the experience of learning to execute precise motoric commands to produce structured sound which in the best case moves us and others – changes brain activity and brain structure. Researchers in this field are facing difficulties and questions, both in terms of how brain activity and brain structure are assessed and how music training is operationalized. This talk will highlight these challenges and also underscore the importance of interdisciplinary research for moving forward research on the way music and neuroplasticity interact. Lastly, this talk will discuss the promises of doing this research: We may discover through this research how the brain operates on a general level – by processing bottom-up and top-down information – and how music may be harnessed for neurorehabilitation.

4. Melanie Malzahn, University of Vienna, Department of Linguistics, former Dean of Faculty for Philological and Cultural Studies: Music and performative arts on the Silk Road
Under the topos “Silk Road(s)”, coined by the German explorer Ferdinand von Richthofen in the 19th century, modern scholarship and public opinion in East and West usually summarize a historical Eurasian trans-regional network of relations that is closely linked above all to economic activities. In this trans-Eurasian network, not only people and goods moved from East to West and from West to East, but also technologies, languages, religions, and ideas. Along the trade routes, different cultures met and influenced each other, changing and evolving. Music and the performing arts were an important part of this cultural package. Despite its importance, musicological research in Silk Road Studies is far less developed than the study of economics, religion, or literature and the like, due to the scattered nature of the evidence for music and the performing arts. The study of music-related sources requires close interdisciplinary collaboration. This paper will discuss the role of some of the most important crossroads on the Eastern Silk Road, namely the Turfan Oasis and the Kingdom of Kucha, in the transfer of musical styles and performances from India to China in the first millennium CE, and will present the diversity of original textual sources, historical records, archaeological finds, and visual art. It will argue that the transmission was far more complex than has previously been suggested in the secondary literature, and will demonstrate the role that music and the performing arts played in the broader cultural interrelationships between ancient India, the Xinjiang region, and the Chinese Six Dynasties, Sui, and Tang empires.

Studies: The art of music performance and
the art of measuring it
Ecologically valid research is necessary for a genuine answer to a research question. Yet how can we control for the myriad of variables that could influence an ecologically valid music performance? This lecture aims to provide attendees with an understanding of which independent variables, which confounds, and which outcomes are of interest to researchers of music performance. It will detail the problems researchers face when trying to conduct ecologically valid research on music performance and why researchers may be keen to conduct this research despite these problems beyond understanding music performance itself: As a model for human collaboration, research on collaborative music performance may help us understand how humans relate to and cooperate with each other. Lastly, this talk will also present on the solutions that researchers have come up with to solve problems with conducting this research so that we may discover a genuine answer to how music performance works.

6. Anja-Xiaoxing Cui, University of Vienna, Department of Musicology / Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies: Research Talk: Singing in the Brain
This research talk will provide a more in-depth look at research on the musical brain and music performance conducted by Anja-Xiaoxing Cui. Specifically, results from first analyses of a larger-scale study on the different effects of language learning, instrumental music training, and opera training on brain function and brain structure will be presented, as well as results from analyses of data from a series of studies on opera performance which were collected in an ecologically valid manner. This talk will also discuss how these two seemingly different research strands relate to each other; namely, by exploring the intersections of music and language. Insights into different other ongoing research projects will be given which also study how music and language relate and interact with each other to provide an overview of the research being conducted at the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna.

7. Christoph Reuter, University of Vienna, Department of Musicology: A Timbre Space Odyssey - How to measure timbre similarity?
Timbre can be described by using various methods. One popular method is the use of timbre spaces, which plot the spectral characteristics of a sound in a mostly three- or four-dimensional space. However, these spaces have limitations and cannot be easily compared or generalized. Another method, Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs), has proven to be effective but the MFCCs are not particularly intuitive. Formants as pitch-independent maxima in the spectrum of an instrument's timbre with a defining effect on its overall character are less universal than MFCCs and cannot be applied equally to all musical instruments. However, in the low/middle registers of most musical instruments they are easily recognizable and thus very intuitive, generalizable and easy to understand. In this talk, various types of timbre spaces and formant maps are presented, including interactive versions as well as a formant map that show timbre changes over the course of a musical piece.

8. Christoph Reuter, University of Vienna, Department of Musicology: Research Talk: Frontiers in Systematic Musicology
The department "Systematic Musicology" at the Musicological Department of the University of Vienna offers a wide range of possibilities for different research approaches in musical acoustics (instrument acoustics, room acoustics, psychoacoustics, sound synthesis, music informatics) and music psychology. In addition to presenting the infrastructure of the institute as well as the MediaLab of the Faculty, Christoph Reuter will present examples of individual research topics of the last years. Besides audio signal analysis on animal sounds, bells, electro vehicles, musical hardness these research foci include research on directional perception, on noise development on preterm infants in incubators, and on the music-induced chill effect. Other capabilities of the institute such as the creation of VR environments and online playable musical instruments will also be presented. The interactive examples presented in the talk invite the audience to try them out online.

Christoph Reuter received his doctorate in 1996 and habilitated at the University of Cologne in 2002. After holding fellowships (GrFG, DFG), assistant and lecturer positions (University of Cologne, University of Vienna, Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar) and working for media and publishing companies (Schott Music International (Mainz), b.i.b. International College (Hannover), IAMP solutions (Cologne)), he became Professor of Systematic Musicology at the University of Vienna in 2008.
From 2012 to 2020, Reuter was head of the institute. Since 2022, he has been head of the study programmes in linguistics and musicology. Since 2021, he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the State Institute for Music Research (SIM, Berlin) and head of the "Musical Acoustics" committee of the German Society for Acoustics (DEGA). Furthermore he is member of the German Society for Music Psychology (DGM, board member 2004-2017), the Austrian Society for Music and Medicine (ÖGfMM, head of the working group "Science and Research" since 2011), the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM), the German (GfM) and the Austrian Society for Music Research (ÖGMW).
In addition to externally funded projects (Austrian Science Fund (FWF), Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), German Research Foundation (DFG), Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF), Swiss National Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research (SNF)), Reuter was/is also involved in contract research projects (currently for Tesla Manufacturing Brandenburg SE, previously for the Vienna House of Music as well as for AKM AustroMechana).
His research interests include musical acoustics, room acoustics, psychoacoustics, music psychology, audio/signal analysis, timbre/noise perception, preterm/incubator acoustics as well as music-related internet and software projects.

Melanie Malzahn studied Historical and General Linguistics and Ancient Oriental Studies at the universities of Hamburg and Vienna and received her doctorate in 2001 from the University of Vienna. After postdoc positions at the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences and research stays at the École pratique des hautes études Paris, Harvard University and UCLA she habilitated at Vienna University in 2009. In 2010 she received the highly prestigious START-grant by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF for establishing a digital edition project of the extinct Tocharian languages (“A comprehensive edition of Tocharian manuscripts--CEToM”). Since 2012 she holds the chair in Comparative Indo-European Linguistics at Vienna University.
She is member of several Academies and has been research director of the Turfan Research Unit of the Brandenburg Academy of Sciences from 2017-2022, and since this year is PI and a member of the board of directors of the Austrian Excellence Cluster “EurAsian Transformations”. Her academic services include dean of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies from 2016-2022 and head of the counsel of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (since 2022).
Her main research focus is Indo-European linguistics (Phonology, Morphology, Semantics), comparative grammar and philology of Tocharian and Ancient Indo-Iranian languages.Several times she has been visiting lecturer at Beijing Minzu University of China and Beijing Language and Culture University.

Anja-Xiaoxing Cui is an interdisciplinary researcher of the psychological aspects of music listening and music making. She received her doctorate in 2019 from Queen‘s University, Kingston, Canada in psychology after studies in psychology at Queen‘s University and Ruhr-University Bochum as well as piano performance at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, one of the world‘s foremost performing arts schools. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, and a visiting professorship at Osnabrück University, she is now Assistant Professor of Neuromediality at the University of Vienna.
Cui was a recipient of the prestigious Vanier scholarship administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada as well as a postdoctoral fellowship by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. She is a member of the German Society for Music Psychology (DGM), the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music (ESCOM), as well as the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC). At the latter, she has been a member of the mentorship committee since 2022.
Cui‘s research interest include the neuroscience of music perception and music making, with a particular focus on the interplay of music and language perception as well as the interplay of music making and language production. Her methods include behavioral and observational studies, the physiological measures such as heart-rate variability and EEG, and neuroimaging approaches such as resting-state fMRI and DTI.
