There are many opinions and theories about the “correct” way to play the Viennese waltz (put casually: “1 – delayed 2 – at some point 3”). Especially in Vienna the wide-spread opinion prevails that only Viennese orchestras can master these small delays and accelerations that give the waltz its typically momentum by way of a quasi-genetic disposition resulting from their unbroken tradition since the times of Lanner, Strauss, and others.
关于演奏维也纳圆舞曲的“正确”方式有很多观点与理论(信手拈来:“1—延迟的2—某个时刻的3”)。特别是在维也纳,这种广泛传播的观点很占优势:只有维也纳的乐团才能掌握这种小延迟与小加速,通过它们源于从兰纳、施特劳斯等人的时代就延续至今的传统,造就了一种类似写入基因的性情,如此给圆舞曲带来它典型的动力性。

The present article gets to the bottom of this myth by (finally) employing empirical methods, using 34 recordings of Johann Strauss’s waltz “An der schönen blauen Donau” from the years 1934–2022 as a sample size of text subjects. 17 of these were recordings by the Vienna New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (that is the “guardians” of the “original” waltz momentum), while 17 were recordings by international orchestras and served for comparison.
这篇文章通过(终于)采用实证方法,触及了这个神话的根本,采用了小约翰•施特劳斯《蓝色多瑙河》来自于从1934到2022年之间的34个录音作为文章主题的样本范围。其中17个是维也纳爱乐乐团(也就是那种“独创的”圆舞曲动力性的“守护者”)的维也纳新年音乐会录音,而其它17个录音来自于国际上的其它乐团,以作为对照。

The jury was impressed by the precise experimental arrangement and clear methodic execution of how the phenomenon was investigated. Furthermore, the logic of the conclusion, which avoids hasty inferences, and the article’s multimedia presentation, which is in keeping with the character of an online journal, were features leaving a favorable impression. The fact that these findings are delivered to Austrian and Viennese readers from distant China was perceived as a delicate ironic twist.
