北京語言學院《中國文學家辭典》現代第二分册一九七九年五月印行,《錢鍾書》:作家,學者。此傳曾經錢先生手;《外國文學手册·錢鍾書》之“作家,文學研究者”,爲錢先生一九八一年七月改定【註一】。《寫在人生邊上》欒貴明排印本一九九〇年六月出版,跋云:以此表示對這位作家的學者敬禮。嘗以“作家的學者”不通欠順【註二】,後閱欒貴明《錢鍾書的圍城·伴山隨筆》影印《寫在人生邊上·出版後記》校樣,方識此句乃錢先生之改筆【註三】。“作家的學者”或近於西文之writer-scholar【註四】,具備文人本質或特點之學者。《幹校六記》Howard Goldblatt(葛浩文)英譯本一九八四年二月出版,“About the Author”謂she met and married the scholar-writer Qian Zhongshu,Scholar-writer(學者的作家)一詞亦錢先生自鑄【註五】。偏其反爾而理以一貫。

【註三】《談藝錄》論《隨園詩話》:捷克形式主義論師謂“詩歌語言”必有突出處,不惜乖違習用“標準語言”之文法詞律,刻意破常示異(foregrounding, the intentional violation of the norm of the standard, distortion);故科以“標準語言”之慣規,“詩歌語言”每不通不順(Jan Mukařovský: “Standard Language and Poetic Language”, in Donald C. Freeman, ed., Linguistics and Literary Style, 1970, 40 ff.)。
【註四】Writer-scholar不經見。Canadian Literature一九六四年冬季號稱Lionel Trilling(錢先生一九五〇年札記Matthew Arnold)爲a writer-scholar;New York Magazine一九七二年一月二十四日第五卷第四號謂William Stanley Rubin爲one qualified professional writer-scholar。
