普外科或普通外科这个名称从中文表达上很难理解，什么是普外科或普通外科？为何深圳市普外科的学术组织名称为深圳市医学会外科学分会，而不是深圳市医学会普外科学分会？

百度百科普外科的定义是：普外科(Department of general surgery)是以手术为主要方法治疗肝脏、胆道、胰腺、胃肠、肛肠、血管疾病、甲状腺和乳房的肿瘤及外伤等其它疾病的临床学科，是外科系统最大的专科。
这里的普外科是专科。
百度百科中普通外科的定义：普通外科学是临床外科学根据治疗目标的不同而分工的一种。（现专指各种腹腔、乳房、甲状腺及简单的皮肤外科）。
这里强调普通外科是一个工种，范围扩大到皮肤外科，现在的皮肤外科更多属于皮肤科或整形外科的范围。
大家都知道普外科和普通外科在医学上是一个意思，但即使百度百科自己的定义也是不统一的。
国内还有的人称普通外科或普外科为基础外科，有的医院还有基础外科这个专业。
这里的问题出自general这个单词，它的意思包括：adj. 总体的，普遍的；一般的，常规的；大致的，大概的；综合的，广泛的；首席的，总管的，全体的，普通的；...
最近看到看到一篇文章，里面的观点是：儿外科才是目前真正的普外科，因为儿外科不是以器官划分的外科专科（大的儿童医院已经开始划分专科了）。

我们知道内科的专科以系统来划分，其原因是内科以病理生理为基础，如消化内科，就是消化系统的内科，外科以解剖为基础，因此以局部解剖来划分专科，如心胸外科，或以器官划分专科，如心外科，普外科或普通外科不是以局部解剖或器官划分，包括各个部位或器官，也就是说普外科应该是综合外科的意思，其实本质就是外科的意思，综合外科或外科然后分出各个专科，可以这么理解外科学术分类上相当于内科是个大专科，综合外科更偏重工作，就是个工种了，这样理解很多问题就有合理性了，据说最后分出来的是泌尿外科，最后剩下的专业就是现在的普外科或普通外科了。

普外科或普通外科诊治的疾病多，既不是按系统来划分，也不是按局部解剖或器官来划分，甲状腺、乳腺、腹部、血管均等包含，因此实际上是一个习惯性的专科，已经失去其原本的意义。
