The 2024-2025 Social Dreaming Matrix (SDM) Series
hosted by The New York Center for the study of Groups, Organizations, and Social Systems
The purpose of The New York Center Social Dreaming series is to foster social dreaming across physical, cultural, and language boundaries in order to gain insights into the functioning of groups, organizations and social systems. Through the sharing of dreams, dreams fragments, and freely associated with their content, we examine the systems, smaller or larger, which we are all a part of.

Purpose
Dreams are an important resource for a community. When accessed and shared they represent a way of thinking together. The Matrix provides a space that enables dreams to speak to us that is unconsciously experienced and thus made available to our conscious living. The purpose of the Social Dreaming is to give birth to new thoughts emerging from the infinite unconscious.
Social Dreaming Event Design
The first part, called the Matrix, is a space where participants share dreams, fragments of dreams, listen to dreams as well as share free associations evoked by dreams (images, thoughts, feelings, sensations, and other dreams). The dreams may be recent, or from any other time or place. Participants who don’t remember a dream, or feel like sharing one, may still associate freely to the dreams and thus participate in the collective associative thinking process of the Matrix that leads to understanding through shifting interconnectivities between dreams and associations.
The Matrix is a space of creativity where unusual connections can be made between dreams and associations, formed in a self-organizing way. Instead of interpreting the meaning of a dream, analyzing the dream, or directly or indirectly raising questions to the person telling the dream, participants will offer another dream or a spontaneous association to the dream as well as making links between the content shared.
Once a dream or an association is shared with the group, any connection to the individual who brought the content ceases. In this context, dreaming is NOT about the individual,
but rather a way to access unattended implicit cultural and species-wide interconnectedness.
The second part, called the Dream Reflection Dialogue(DRD), is an opportunity to reflect on the content and themes that emerged during the Matrix and to develop hypotheses about possible connections with wider interpersonal, cultural, or global realities. It is the communal sense-making space where thoughts, images and feelings from the matrix are brought into thoughts that can be taken away and used.
The role of the hosts is to keep the boundaries of the matrix. The task is to keep the time boundary and to support the associative thinking process and the fluidity of the matrix, creating a space for freedom of movement and thought through a minimum of intervention. It is the dreaming and the associations that speak and as such are self-organizing.
