About this Issue
Women and gender is an indispensable component in the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). TCM encapsulates the relationship between gender and social space within the framework of yin-yang theory, reflecting the unique ideological context of Chinese culture. In addition, literature such as medical books, medical cases, formulas and prescriptions, local chronicles, anecdotal novels, etc. provide precious records that recreate the medical, social, and cultural changes from the perspectives of women and gender in ancient Chinese society.
The special issue aims to focus on the discussions of women, gender, and the body in the history of TCM, deeply exploring the unique understanding of women's bodies within TCM culture, including physiological diseases and therapeutic theories. It further examines the evolution of TCM theories and medical practices regarding gynecological diseases, uncovering how social gender, class, and family relations shape the doctor-patient relationships for women. It reveals the evolution and development of TCM within Chinese society and academic trends, providing new insights for a profound interpretation of the history of TCM from a gender perspective.
