Multi-family therapy (MFT) was first proposed by psychiatrist Laqueur in 1964 and was once called the "welfare factory of family communication" because of its unique efficacy.
The main theoretical basis of MFT is derived from group therapy and family therapy, which treats the whole family as a system, emphasizes the importance of interaction and relationship patterns between family members, and through group discussion and interaction, family members can learn new behavior patterns and problem-solving skills, so as to improve family functioning and solve individual problems.
MFT is interdisciplinary in schools, with a therapeutic process involving multiple disciplines such as psychology, pedagogy, and social work, and the focus of intervention is not only on the individual, but also on interactions within the family, between families and schools, and within the school system.
At present, the application of MFT in Chinese mainland is still in its infancy, and the speaker led a team to carry out a round of 5 rounds of 10-hour multi-family therapy in a key high school in Shanghai to conduct empowerment training for parents of adolescents with emotional problems. The results of the training showed that MFT provided an opportunity for families to challenge and support each other, and it created an excellent environment for intensive therapy compared to traditional home therapy. At the same time, the work of MFT is highly appealing, the effect is easy to consolidate, and it can create an interrelated support network, which has good generalizability and application prospects.
