Last week, the students of SNA's senior class in the "Chinese Traditional Culture and Architecture" course embarked on a special field trip to the renowned Suzhou Garden—Ou Garden. This cultural exploration was not only an immersive experience into traditional culture but also a beautiful encounter with love, art, and garden design.
Ou Garden is a gem among the Suzhou gardens, particularly captivating due to its unique historical and cultural background. This garden was built by Shen Bingcheng, a garden master from the Qing Dynasty, and was named "Ou Garden." The name carries the meanings of "coupling" and "twin," symbolizing the deep love between him and his wife, Yan Yonghua. Shen Bingcheng personally created this "Garden of Love" for his beloved, symbolizing the inseparable bond between them, as closely connected as lotus roots, always intertwined and never apart.
This class was not the traditional "teacher lectures, students listen" format. Instead, the students were given a "mission challenge." Based on clues provided by the teacher beforehand, they were tasked with exploring and discovering within Ou Garden, uncovering the secrets of Suzhou's classical gardens.
As soon as the task was announced, the students were eager to get started. With garden maps in hand, they divided into groups, each with clear responsibilities. Some were tasked with locating the pavilions and towers, others focused on the shapes of the decorative windows and doors, while some concentrated on interpreting the meanings behind the plaques and couplets. As they walked, observed, and discussed, they not only gained a deeper understanding of the design principles of Suzhou gardens but also experienced the joy of exploratory learning.
Every design element in the garden seemed to be quietly telling its own story. The students discovered that the pavilions and towers in the garden blended perfectly with the surrounding environment. For example, the "Zhenbo Tower" is built close to the water's edge, making it appear as though it is resting on the water, hence the name "Zhenbo" (Pillow of the Waves). They also learned about the main structures of traditional Chinese architecture. The flower windows in the garden varied in design, each with its own charm. The most representative ones were the flower windows at the east and west garden entrances, which featured the patterns of a full moon and the sun.
The plaques and couplets in the garden further revealed the cultural depth and aspirations of the garden's owner. One notable couplet, displayed at the "Zhenbo Double Reclining" spot, reads: "Ouyuan, where a perfect couple resides, and the city is built like a poetic garden," written by the female owner herself. These two short lines vividly express the couple's emotions, interests, and cultural background. During this process, students took many detailed photos to document their findings and engaged in discussions, complementing each other's observations, thus laying the foundation for their final reflections.
The exploration of Ouyuan Garden was an important opportunity for the students to deepen their understanding of traditional culture. It allowed them to experience the richness of history and the intricacy of art in a real-world setting, while also raising awareness of the importance of cultural heritage. Through teamwork, students not only acquired knowledge but also felt the warmth of traditional culture. This "Garden of Love" is not only a marvel of architectural art but also a reflection of intellectual thought, carrying the aspirations of people towards nature, life, and emotions.
In future classrooms, we look forward to more opportunities like this—stepping out of the textbooks and into history—so that the seeds of culture can take root and flourish in the hearts of young people. Ouyuan Garden is not just a garden; it is the crystallization of love, culture, and art. Here, students not only witnessed the beauty of architecture but also felt the deep affection and bond that permeates the space.
