As the vibrant red maples and golden ginkgo trees bloom in late autumn, and the dawn redwoods don their reddish-brown attire, they capture the attention of young students. In celebration of the 4th Tiger Hill Wetland Redwood Season, students took part in field studies and hands-on experiences. This activity not only offered them a chance to unwind and reconnect with nature amid their busy academic schedules but also allowed them to marvel at the wonders of the natural world while raising their awareness about environmental protection.

Aligned with our school’s SNA SDGs Goal 13: "Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts," the SNA International Department’s Chinese team used wetlands as an entry point to guide students in exploring the impact of these "kidneys of the earth" on climate change.

Tiger Hill Wetland Park is located in the northwest of Suzhou's urban center, spanning a total area of 873 hectares across Gusu and Xiangcheng Districts. Bordering the Tiger Hill Scenic Area to the south, it is one of the "Four Corner Waterscapes" identified in Suzhou's urban planning. The park also serves as a key "green wedge" in the "Two Belts, Three Rings, Five Wedges" green space system and acts as an important "ecological green lung" in northwest Suzhou. It plays a vital role in accelerating Suzhou's ecological civilization construction.

The park is divided into nine thematic zones: the Reed and Pond Conservation Zone, the Science Education Experience Zone, the Waterfront Leisure Zone, the Water Village Farming Zone, the Fishing Culture Zone, the Lotus Culture Zone, the Floral Background Zone, the Forest Background Zone, and the Urban Service Zone.

In the early morning, SNA teachers and students boarded a bus and set off on time, filled with anticipation and joy along the way. After nearly an hour's drive, the bus slowly pulled into the Zhuangzhi Bridge entrance of Tiger Hill Wetland Park. As soon as they stepped off the bus, the students were captivated by the breathtaking scenery before them, as if they had stepped into a vivid landscape painting.

Guided by their teachers, the students first visited the aquatic redwood forest attraction. The vegetation here primarily consists of dawn redwoods, native to the southeastern United States. These trees thrive in warm, humid, and sunny environments, making them well-suited for planting along lakeshores, riverbanks, and wetland areas. As the students explored, they listened attentively to their teachers' explanations and occasionally paused to jot down their reflections in their study booklets.

Wandering through the wooden corridors, the students soon arrived at the Fisherman’s Culture Zone. Here, the ancestors thrived by living alongside lakes and rivers, engaging in fishing and farming, which created the prosperity of this land, known as the "Land of Fish and Rice." From a bird’s-eye view, the city of Pingjiang is nestled in a gentle embrace of hills and rivers. In the northwest corner, a broad green axis stretches from Tiger Hill to the Tiger Hill Wetlands and further to Xitang River, embodying Professor Wu Liangyong’s urban development vision of “a central ancient city, integrated with two wings, and four corner waterscapes.”

The Fisherman’s Culture Zone preserves and passes down the unique fishing song culture and rustic lifestyle of the triangular region, blending it seamlessly with the picturesque scenery of Tiger Hill Wetlands. The autumn sunlight dances across the reed beds, casting a golden sail upon the landscape. From afar, the Tiger Hill Pagoda stands as a silent witness to a millennium of history, harmonizing perfectly with the rustic charm of the reeds. Together, they compose a captivating Jiangnan-style tableau.

As the students stepped into the Curved Bridge and Lotus Viewpoint, they learned about the composition, functions, and importance of protecting wetland ecosystems. Through vivid images, models, and explanations, they gained a more intuitive and in-depth understanding of the wetland ecosystem.

Afterward, they followed the park’s walking paths, appreciating the beautiful scenery while observing the plants and animals inhabiting the wetlands. In one corner of the park, the students discovered a patch of reed beds, where wild ducks could occasionally be seen weaving through the reeds, adding a lively charm to the tranquil landscape.

In the afternoon, the students arrived at the Purification Garden and Submerged Corridor. Spanning about 2 hectares, the Purification Garden is divided into two sections. The southern section consists of a series of interconnected purification ponds, with water cascading down from the highest purification pond in tiers. The process of water purification is vividly demonstrated through aeration and the use of various aquatic plants. The northern section features the Submerged Corridor, where 39 underwater glass panels provide a clear view of aquatic plants and animals.

As the students wandered through the area, they enthusiastically took out their phones to capture photos of fish swimming gracefully and snails seemingly "fast asleep." Geography teacher Mr. Li Youmai explained that the water purification plants include submerged species like hornwort, eelgrass, and parrot feather, as well as floating and emergent plants such as water lilies, duckweed, canna, and cattails. The experience offered the students an engaging and educational glimpse into the wonders of wetland ecosystems.

Currently, the global precipitation patterns are shifting due to the impacts of climate change, significantly affecting numerous species that depend on wetlands for survival. Without the protection provided by robust wetland ecosystems, extreme weather events—traditionally considered rare and localized—are becoming increasingly frequent and widespread. Wetlands serve not only as regulators of climate change but also as indicators of its effects. They play a crucial role in cooling and humidifying the environment, retaining floodwaters, and sequestering carbon.

China joined the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1992. Through years of dedicated efforts, the country has seen a significant increase in wetland areas. A comprehensive wetland conservation system has been established, centered on 41 internationally important wetlands, over 550 wetland nature reserves, and more than 400 wetland parks, marking significant progress in national wetland protection.

After the activity, the students gathered in the park’s rest area to exchange thoughts and share their experiences. Many expressed that this field study not only enriched their knowledge but also deepened their love for nature and their appreciation for the environment around them. Upon returning to school, under the guidance of their teachers, the students crafted beautiful "plant frames" using the plant specimens they had collected, preserving this unique memory of autumn and winter.

This activity not only enriched the students' extracurricular lives but also enhanced their environmental awareness and teamwork skills. We believe that in the days to come, SNA students will continue to uphold the school motto, "VIEWING THE WORLD AS ONE," actively exploring, boldly practicing, and striving diligently to achieve their dreams.
