Competitive sports are a path filled with inevitable challenges, yet often rich in rewards. This year, our school welcomed a new tennis talent, Peien Deng, who has joined SNA as an athletic scholar. Let's explore her unique journey in tennis and the vibrant energy of her youth.
After Zheng Qinwen won gold at this year's Paris Olympics, Chinese tennis instantly captured the attention of audiences worldwide and domestically. Deng Peien was also selected for the Grand Slam Player Development Program (GSPDP) in the U16 tour category. With the start of the Chinese tennis season, Deng Peien, as a representative of youth tennis players, was interviewed and featured by CCTV.

My introduction to tennis was actually quite coincidental. Back in second grade, my dad was learning tennis with a friend at Shamian. At first, I would just wait on the sidelines, playing with ants and such. One day, I decided to give it a try myself, and I found it really fun! After that, I started lining up to practice after school; there were about ten of us sharing one court, and it was such a joyful experience.
With that came the pressure. When I first started, my peers were already sprinting along the baseline, rallying back and forth. During my first tournament, the partner I was paired with for doubles thought I was so bad that he withdrew from the match, leaving me with a debut record of 0-6, haha. At that time, I didn't even have a chance to feel upset.

Later on, it was mainly my interest that drove me forward. Under the guidance of my foundational coach, I gradually improved my game. By the age of 14, I had achieved a small goal I set for myself: finishing the year ranked second nationally and earning the title of a national first-class athlete. At 15, I began competing internationally in ITF tournaments. Although I felt as slow as a snail, and the matches were a mix of wins and losses, overall, I was continuously making progress and moving forward.
This year, I was also fortunate enough to be selected for the Grand Slam Player Development Program U16 Tour group. I traveled with my coach to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan for training and competitions. Afterwards, I followed our sponsor YONEX to Japan to participate in the VAMOS.J training camp. I am particularly grateful for such opportunities to challenge myself and hope to accelerate my growth even further!

Training is indeed very demanding for all athletes, and tennis, being an outdoor sport, exposes us to the sun for long periods. This year, after coming back from Guam and Saipan in the summer, I had a layer of skin peel off my entire back, which was extremely painful. There are also times when accidental injuries or strains from excessive exertion, such as sprains, bruises, and twisted ankles, force us to stop training and competing.
On the other hand, competitive sports are quite merciless; it's not simply about how much you train. The scientific approach to training also matters, and sometimes, even the luck of the draw in a tournament can affect outcomes, which can lead to anxiety over rankings and points among athletes. Additionally, unexpected situations do occur. For instance, I was in Ho Chi Minh City, all set to compete as the top seed, but was suddenly hospitalized with a gastrointestinal infection just before the match, which took me out for a week. However, there was also a time when I was down 2-6, 0-2, 0-40 and managed to turn the match around after four hours of intense play, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 against a higher-ranked opponent, earning points and advancing to the next round. All these are reasons why I love tennis.
"One memorable competition was last year's ITF J60 tournament in Fiji. Before that, I had faced consecutive setbacks in Japan and then spent two weeks training with a local coach, who even took me to his alma mater, Hosei University in Japan, to train with his juniors. At that time, there happened to be a tournament coming up in Fiji, and I suggested trying it out. However, my coach back home thought it wasn’t the right time as I had significant technical issues (which was true) that needed to be addressed with intensive training back home, essentially to 'break it down and rebuild'."
At the time, I was somewhat impulsive; I really wanted to prove myself and felt capable, which led to my first ideological conflict with my coach. After much back and forth, the coach finally agreed to let me compete. I then flew from Tokyo to Hong Kong and from there to Fiji in the Southern Hemisphere. There, I met a group of peers from Australia and New Zealand, and somewhat serendipitously, I won my first ITF singles title and finished as runner-up in doubles. This experience was very significant for me, as it was the first time I evaluated myself and boldly seized an opportunity.

Before coming to the school, my parents did some research. The school's environment and learning atmosphere are excellent, and there are many other students with exceptional talents in various programs. Initially, I was worried that transitioning to an international school might pose language challenges. Fortunately, as a tennis player who competes internationally, although my vocabulary may not be extensive, I am willing to speak up and express myself, so basic English communication is not a problem. I respect my opponents and referees, and at school, I respect teachers and fellow students, which makes for harmonious relationships. I am especially grateful to SNA for their support, allowing me to take leaves of absence to compete. The teachers are very concerned about my studies and frequently check on my progress through WeChat and emails, providing substantial help in all aspects.

Actually, I haven't thought too far ahead about the profession I will pursue in the future, but I am clear that I want to continue playing tennis. After consulting with educational advisors, my current plan is to use tennis to gain admission to my preferred university and to continue playing at a high level in college. I also feel very fortunate because I love tennis, and if I can make it my profession or have a future career related to tennis or sports, I would be more than happy to accept the challenges it brings.
Pei'en openly admits that she is still uncertain about whether tennis will be her ultimate career choice, but she is clear about her passion and dedication to the sport. She hopes to continue her tennis career in college, while also achieving her academic goals through the sport. She says, "If my future career can be related to tennis or sports, I will give it my all, because that is what I love."
