These five poems are concerned with the mysteries of time and memory. In Zhang Zhihao’s ‘Getting Dark’ the poet sits writing and editing poetry as evening approaches.quietly send you out into the nightThe speaker is distracted by the changing appearance of tea in a cup, of a garden plant rustling against the window, of the sight and sound of birds, and by the sound of a mother calling in her children. The children, however, are oblivious of everything except the present pleasure of skateboarding. All these apparent distractions and experiences turn out to be important to the poem, as they are in our lives. The world comes into the poem and then the poem goes back out into the world.‘Memories of Adolescence’ by Yang Yang begins with the vivid colours relished by young people. It starts with bright hair clips and headbands but soon proceeds to a wider range of associations. These include footprints in asphalt, the flickering colours of fish in a tank, gaudy sweet wrappers and the sound of birds as a youngster plays alone in the street. All these details add up to a moving evocation of childhood and invite the reader to reflect on their own past memories and experiences.Pigeons sounded, like the sky talking to itselfand the lonely lad playing marbles all alone‘Mother’s Love Continues in My Dream’ is by Zang Haiying. It talks about how memory and time are transformed by dreams, magical imaginative experiences where childhood may continue and happy times from years ago may persist. In this respect, dreams can be similar to poems. This poem captures and shares such a dream:My mother always loves me in my dreams.Yang Senjun’s poem, the fourth of our present selection, is called ‘At the Farmers’ Market in Alxa Youqi’. The poem recalls the memorable experience of meeting a young woman at the market of the title. Nothing really happens, but the sight of the woman makes a deep and lasting impression on the speaker of the poem. The woman simply holds her baby and buys some vegetables. Yet the impression of quiet sadness in her face has remained in the speaker’s consciousness ever since and seems to float somewhere beyond time.… I remember the look in her eyesneither superficial nor fleetingI believe that look had always lived thereThe final poem of the group is Li Li’s ‘Twelve Years’. The opening lines sum up the mystery of time in human experience, how it can seem very long and very short at the same time:I have lived here for twelve yearsThe speaker observes the effect of time on his immediate surroundings. He wipes stains from the door and looks at the deteriorating paint work. But his most intense memories are of his daughter when she was a baby still in hospital with her mother. He reflects on each of the subsequent moments in his daughter’s life, and concludes that the life of a loved will will always seem much too short:successive moment of her life,
