Peter Hughes

This selection of poems starts with Yang Yang’s ‘Little Dewdrops’, a poem concerned with scale and transience. It opens with a sense of great distances stretching out in all directions, contrasting with the smallness of the individual. Then the children innocently playing carries a subtle undercurrent of danger because the game they are playing is Eagle and Chicks. The brevity and fragility of life are suggested in the small flames of the lamp as well as by the dewdrops which fall from the sunflower. Nonetheless we know that the young girl has her whole life in front of her, a life – we hope – full of pleasurable companionship and natural beauty.

The second poem, ‘How Trees Converse’ by Shu Dandan, reminds us of the secret lives of trees and how they can communicate through interlinked fungal networks connecting their root systems. They can co-ordinate their life processes such as budding, flowering and losing their leaves in autumn. They can even alert each other to the danger of insect attacks. The ending of the poem is very powerful in the way it reminds us how trees, and plants generally, also combine to create the very air we breathe and transform the world’s weather.

‘To the Moon’ by Dong Lun is also concerned with questions of scale, moving from the small seeds of the pomegranate to the distant moon. This poem moves through time too, remembering village scenes from years ago. The seasons change, the corn ripens again, and the moon still illuminates the settlement.

Wu Suzhen’s ‘The Lonely Peak’ presents us with the static and impersonal power of a solitary mountain. This contrasts with the cranes flying overhead and the little sparrows chirping as they scurry in and out of the rocks. After acknowledging the shared loneliness of the speaker and the mountain, the poet observes that when the storm comes the crevices of the mountain will offer shelter to these small birds. So the mountain may not be as lonely as it looks at first glance. And perhaps the poet is not as lonely either, in the company of these closely-observed phenomena.

Jiang Xuefeng looks back over the years in the poem ‘Firefly’, and wonders if those creatures can still be found. The poet hasn’t seen one in ages and observes that the children who used to catch them in glass bottles have now all grown up. The poem concludes that the years have taken away more than the fireflies, and a kind of hopelessness has replaced the dreams of youth:

‘Since those journeys illuminated by fireflies
we have lost ourselves to darkness’

These poems remind us once again of the peculiar power of poetry to connect past and present, memory and aspiration (or regret). And again we bear witness to poetry’s ability to reconnect us to the awesome presences of the natural world through rhythm, the sonic features of language, and close attention to detail.

Little Dewdrops

By Yang Yang

Long, long the railway, stretching to the south and north, the east and west

to places I have never been

Long, long the locomotive

its black wheels stand taller than me

Kids playing Eagle and Chicks

I see the youngest girl amongst them

in the power of night

I see the small flames flicker in the kerosene lamp

Next morning I see

trains rumbling away

and dewdrops on the disk of the sunflower

falling one by one

How Trees Converse

By Shu Dandan

After the rain, trees open their freshly-rinsed ears

they speak with branches and leaves, together with the twining roots

emitting subtle codes from one tree to another

The taller a tree is, the larger its vocabulary

With their own memory vault, trees count down to spring’s arrival

blooming to pre-arranged schedules

then becoming dormant together before the winter comes –

They synchronise with each other perfectly

through their shared pulsating frequencies

When a tree is cut, bitter liquid seeps

from the wound of its partner; when a tree is blocked from sunlight

another will rearrange its branches

When two trees chat, fruit grows in the moonlight

when several trees converse, good weather is conceived

To the Moon
By Dong Lun

It’s been so long since I wandered along this modern road
heading eastward with a sigh, like the ripe pomegranate

leaping from the tree to spread its small red seeds
Now the ripe corn in the field grows up to meet us

You try to blow the little rusty horn
with all the fauna of autumn. Remember

years ago we looked up at the moon in the old yard
behind light and shadow, like mischievous phantoms

the full moon climbs high over the bridge, so close
and yet so far, gazing down on us and every corner of the village

The Lonely Peak
By Wu Suzhen

Such a vast expanse of stone
free of compromise and emotion –
barren, with scorched, fallen walls

So many scars and clefts left by time
only the sparrows making themselves heard
poke their tiny round heads out from time to time
The peak and me, we regard each other all afternoon,
our mottled colours and loneliness
are one and the same
Clouds fly over like ancient cranes
I should tell the peak before I descend
that when the wind stills
trees will shift, fledglings
will seek shelter from gales
Your cracked, ascetic body
for them will be a godsend

Firefly
By Jiang Xuefeng

Remember when you last saw a firefly?
I wonder if they still have a home
in this world
The small boys who chased them have grown up
and no longer keep an empty bottle handy
to catch them

Remember the last time
you wrote down the word ‘firefly’?
At a quarter to six this morning
the flashing childhood memories suddenly return

Since those journeys illuminated by fireflies
we have lost ourselves to darkness
