New Year at the Coast

By Yuan Yang

You are alone on this coastal headland

camping out, and waiting to glimpse

the first sunlight of the new year

You still have the heart of a child

though you’re no longer young

after many days of darkness in a bleak room

and isolated years of Covid lockdown

In the new year to come, it is my sincere wish

that you may be reborn, yes born anew

Let the sea wind blow away the past

with all its sorrows and regrets

Your night will be restless

your body, long  plagued by pain and illness,

will struggle to emerge from your sleeping bag

to embrace with open arms

the resilience of sunrise by the sea

born through these cracks in coastal rock

Pleasure in Daily Routines

By Chen Jun

The morning rain is intermittent, as when you

meditate yet glance out of the window

every now and then, observing how the drizzle

sometimes speaks to the green trees in park

You keep opening and closing the windows

grumbling that the air resembles a huge bubble

but unable to travel to another planet

So instead of venturing to worlds of ice and fire

to rescue plants and animals in space, I have to

lie down

or work on the computer all day

It’s a life of profound boredom (as Heidegger said)

A child says, the words you write will disappear – computer files

will be clicked into the bin or printed out  (same result)

Even calligraphy and paintings will disappear

Only inscriptions on stone could last a little longer.

Yet seconds later they will all be swept away by entropy

And I may catch tigers

or elephants, or tung leaves

but they will all stream through the window on the river of time

just as I learn the stupidity of weighing fate

Poem at the Field’s Edge

By Wang Jianzhao

How blue and vast the sky is

The wilderness brings a pleasant balance to our eyes

the narrow ridge recalls the colours of autumn

The poles, wheelbarrows, bamboo baskets and threshing equipment

restore visions of the past

Language gives humans the chance to give thanks

Pictograph and onomatopoeia have the strength

to pierce the existence of nothingness

In the tough rice stubble after harvest

the secret of writing remains

Those who recite on stage are not the only poets

Rice plants can also speak,

their sounds begin to dance

evoking meanings beyond words

Along the ridge between the pond and field

five thriving orange trees stand

They prick up their round golden ears as though

listening to the conversation between us and nature

Small Town Time

By Xie Jun

Nurture sound

with silence

silence could help the onion

falling from my mother’s hand

to make a clear sound

Autumn dawn

there is light in the sky

light doesn’t move – it is one of my expressions

count the windows across the street

count the shops along the road

Count, the individual lights come on, and there is just one town

Mount Hope

By Wang Xinzi

Piles of dark red pine needles on the ground

tall slender pine trees extend on both sides

and wind up to the top of the mountain.

A wide field opens up in front of you

the glowing paddy fields finely divided by ridges

Various houses are hidden under the green canvas

The majestic mountains slowly disappear from near to far

This picture filters out the restlessness and worry of the moment

filling the eye with clarity. In peace

I stand here looking out time and time again, imagining

that in the best location, no matter how often I return,

the distances are always there

These poems speak to us of light and silence, darkness and hope, and language, as well as the resilience of life on earth. The first poem is Yuang Yang’s ‘New Year at the Coast’, a celebration of fresh beginnings after periods of difficulty. The poem speaks of illness and isolation, a period of covid, lockdown and solitude. But the elemental setting, on the rocky coast, makes the reader think about the basic conditions of life and renewal. ‘You still have the heart of a child / though you’re no longer young’, says stanza two. Hope is hard to extinguish. Even though the night is cold, you will awake to see the light. The poem ends with these stirring lines that say, even though you ‘will struggle to emerge from your sleeping bag’, you will:

…embrace with open arms

the resilience of sunrise by the sea

born through these cracks in coastal rock

The second poem, ‘Pleasure in Daily Routines’ by Chen Jun, considers time and the transience of all things. This is the context for our daily activities such as grumbling about the weather, or being stuck in front of a computer screen for hours on end. All out dreams and tribulations are temporary – ‘they will all stream through the window on the river of time’. So we might as well be philosophical about the challenges and hopes we live through every day. All our thoughts, computer files, calligraphy and paintings will disappear. ‘Only inscriptions on stone could last a little longer.’

‘Poem at the Field’s Edge’ by Wang Jianzhao brings language to the foreground. The language of poetry has the power to bring the culture of the past into the present: ‘The poles, wheelbarrows, bamboo baskets and threshing equipment / restore visions of the past’. Poetry can also capture and preserve the sounds of nature, ‘Rice plants can also speak, / their sounds begin to dance / evoking meanings beyond words’. And our meditations on landscape may be enshrined in language, enacting our conversations with the natural world:

Along the ridge between the pond and field

five thriving orange trees stand

They prick up their round golden ears as though

listening to the conversation between us and nature

‘Small Town Time’ by Xie Jun weaves silence and light into a unified vision of a small town at dawn. It opens with the injunction to ‘Nurture sound / with silence’. The individual details of the townscape blend into one patient sense of wholeness in the poem’s closing lines:

count the windows across the street

count the shops along the road

Count, the individual lights come on, and there is just one town

The fifth and final poem of this group is Wang Xinzi’s ‘Mount Hope’. This beautiful composition relies on a shift in scale to take us from the tiny ‘dark red pine needles’ in the foreground all the way to the mountains fading away into the distance. Distance, like hope, brings peace and lifts us from the fuss and distractions of our immediate surroundings. Yet where we stand remains the best location, enabling this view:

This picture filters out the restlessness and worry of the moment

filling the eye with clarity. In peace

I stand here looking out time and time again, imagining

that in the best location, no matter how often I return,

the distances are always there
